In a swift and decisive response to a distressing incident that unfolded at Orita Mefa Baptist High School on the 21st of March, 2024, Honorable Suraj Oloye Tiamy, the Special Adviser on Education to the Oyo State Governor, demonstrated commendable leadership and a deep commitment to the welfare of students under his purview.

The episode, which was unfortunately captured on video and circulated widely across social media platforms, depicted a disturbing scene where a security official was seen maltreating a student within the school premises. This alarming visual sparked immediate concern among the public and warranted an urgent response from educational authorities and state officials alike.

Upon learning of the incident, Honorable Tiamy wasted no time in addressing the issue head-on. In a concerted effort to get to the bottom of the matter, he engaged directly with key figures at the school, including Rev Dr. Diran Adeleke, the School’s Church Pastor; Akingbade Bamidele, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the school; and Deacon Tunji Ilesanmi, the School Principal. Additionally, the student at the center of the incident was involved in the discussions, ensuring that all sides of the story were heard and considered.

The investigations conducted in the wake of the incident led to significant actions being taken against the security personnel involved.

It was reported that the individual was arrested, detained, and subsequently suspended indefinitely from their duties at the school. Moreover, the security personnel extended a formal apology to the student’s parents, acknowledging the gravity of the misconduct and its impact on the student and their family.

In a statement reflecting on the incident, Honorable Tiamy emphasized, “The safety of our students in Oyo State is paramount to us.

Educational environments must be safe havens where our children can grow and develop to their full potential, as they represent the future of our great state.”

This sentiment underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring a secure and conducive learning environment for all students.

The decisive actions taken by Honorable Tiamy and his team in response to this unfortunate incident highlight the Oyo State Government’s dedication to upholding the highest standards of student welfare and security.

It serves as a reminder of the critical importance of vigilance, accountability, and prompt action in safeguarding the rights and well-being of students across educational institutions.
