MmOyo State government is set to celebrate the annual Yemoja Festival, scheduled to run from October 10 to October 27, 2024, at Popoyemoja in Ibadan.

The annual festival honours Yemoja, the Orisa symbolising motherhood and fertility, and serves as a crucial cultural event for the Yoruba people.

While disclosing this on Monday, during a press briefing held at the Council for Arts and Culture, the Commissioner for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, outlined the significance of the festival and its alignment with the state’s cultural tourism initiatives under the Omituntun 2.0 Agenda, led by Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde.

He emphasised the state government’s commitment to promoting and preserving local traditions while enhancing community engagement.

“This festival is not just a celebration; it is an opportunity to showcase our rich heritage and strengthen our economy through cultural tourism,” Dr. Olatunbosun stated.

He highlighted that the festival will draw participants from across Yoruba-speaking states and the diaspora, promoting cultural exchange and unity among communities.

“We invite everyone to come and partake in this vibrant celebration, which recognizes the importance of mothers and their role in our society.”

“The Yemoja Festival, which spans 17 days, will feature a variety of activities, including traditional rites, cultural performances, and community gatherings.”

“One of the festival’s key attractions will be the Effigy of Ogunieki, a historical statue that depicts a mother breastfeeding her child, symbolizing the enduring legacy and strength of motherhood.”

“The festival promises to be a significant cultural event, reinforcing Oyo State’s position as a hub for cultural tourism and heritage preservation.”

He, however, urged residents of the state and visitors alike to join in honouring the spirit of Yemoja and the values she represents.

In his remarks , Baale Omikunmi Egbelade underscores the importance of the festival towards boosting the economy of the state

He therefore called on all Yoruba sons and daughters to return to our cultural values and traditions and to uphold and protect the legacies of our forefathers.
