Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has called for an improvement in the remuneration of lawyers in Nigeria, citing the challenging economic realities in the country.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, December 21, Adeyanju asserted that no lawyer should earn less than N250,000 as a basic salary, excluding additional benefits.

He expressed concern that law firms paying below this threshold were devaluing the legal profession.

“With the current situation of things in Nigeria, no lawyer should be paid less than N250k as basic salary excluding other benefits,” Adeyanju wrote.

“Any law firm paying less than this is ridiculing the profession. We must be the change we want to see in the profession.”

Adeyanju’s comment has sparked conversations within the legal community and beyond, highlighting the financial struggles faced by many young lawyers in the country.

With inflation and the high cost of living affecting various sectors, the activist’s statement brings to the front burner the need for reforms in the legal profession to ensure fair compensation.
