The Ajia Olubadan of Ibadanland and Chairman of Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort, Chief Jubril Dotun Sanusi, has expressed profound grief over the passing of His Royal Highness, Oba Sunmaila Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola (Kurunloju I), the revered Oniroko of Iroko, who joined his ancestors in the early hours of Friday, May 30, 2025.

In a heartfelt condolence message released to the press, Chief Sanusi described the late monarch as “an inspiring traditional ruler, a peacemaker, and a strong pillar of cultural preservation and community development.”

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of our highly respected royal father, Oba Sunmaila Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola, the Oniroko of Iroko. He was an inspiring monarch who dedicated his life to uplifting his people and preserving the cultural dignity of Iroko and the Akinyele Local Government Area at large,” Chief Sanusi stated.

Chief Sanusi emphasized that the late Oba Kurunloju I was a shining example of royal humility, wisdom, and progressive leadership. He noted that the monarch’s reign brought about stability, growth, and a renewed sense of identity among the people of Iroko.

“Kabiyesi’s leadership was deeply rooted in wisdom, compassion, and vision. He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of his subjects and his consistent efforts to promote peace and development. His legacy will endure in the annals of Oyo State’s traditional institutions,” he added.

Chief Sanusi extended his condolences to the Opeola-Oniroko Royal Family, the people of Iroko town, and the entire Akinyele Local Government community, urging them to take solace in the impactful life and service of the departed monarch.

“On behalf of myself, my family, and the entire Ilaji community, I commiserate with the good people of Iroko and Oyo State. May Almighty Allah forgive Kabiyesi’s shortcomings and grant him Aljanah Firdaus. A great tree has fallen,” he concluded.

Oba Opeola’s final burial rite is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2025, in Iroko, in line with Islamic tradition.
