A frontline journalist, Akeem Babatunde Abas, popularly known as Alakime, has declared his intention to contest the chairmanship of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council.

Speaking at his formal declaration themed “Raising the Bar, Preserving the Legacies”, Abas said his ambition was driven by sincerity, service, and a desire to strengthen journalism in Oyo State.

Abas, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Correspondent in Oyo State, described his ambition as one built on collective progress, not personal interest, stressing leadership must focus on purpose and impact.

He acknowledged the solid foundation laid by past leaders of Oyo NUJ and said the time had come to consolidate their achievements and chart a more progressive and inclusive future for the union.

When elected, Abas promised to prioritise members’ welfare, promote training and digital innovation, uphold ethics and foster unity across chapels for a more responsive and transparent union.

Reacting to perceived campaign distractions, Abas said he was not perturbed by blackmail or insinuations, noting such actions only prove that his message and mission resonate with members.

He pledged to maintain an issue-based campaign free from bitterness and division, affirming that the NUJ remains an apolitical, professional body built on fairness and mutual respect.

Abas called on all journalists across Oyo State to unite behind his vision of raising the bar, preserving legacies, and building a stronger, more progressive NUJ for all members.
