Dr Adebowale Debo Akande has facilitated the installation and commissioning of 22 solar-powered street lights along the Mapo–Orita-Merin axis in Ibadan South West Local Government Area, as part of efforts to improve safety and stimulate economic activity within the historic Oja-Oba market corridor.

The intervention is expected to extend trading hours, enhance visibility, and support the daily activities of traders and residents in one of Ibadan’s busiest commercial hubs.

Market men and women who spoke during the commissioning expressed optimism about the immediate impact of the project, noting that improved lighting would allow them to operate for longer hours and increase their daily earnings.

“Now we can stay longer to sell. Before, once it got dark, we had to close early,” one trader said.

“Community members also highlighted the security benefits, stating that the improved lighting would enable local vigilante groups to better monitor the area and reduce incidents associated with poorly lit spaces.

“The dark corners used to be a problem. Now everywhere is visible. It will help security a lot,” another resident noted.

The commissioning attracted key political, community, and traditional stakeholders in Ibadan South West LGA, including:
Baba Nureni Akanbi, Member, Oyo State Elders Council, Hon Kehinde Akande, Executive Chairman, Ibadan South West LGA, represented by Alhaji Hassan Aburyan, Chief of Staff to the LGA Chairman
Mr Kunle Folarin, PDP Chairman, Ibadan South West LGA.

Others included, Mogaji Qumardeen Adeniyi Salawudeen, President, Omo Ajorosun Ibadan, Hon Wale Adelodun James, Leader of the Legislative House, Ibadan South West LGA
All Honourable Councillors, Ibadan South West LGA, all Supervisory Councillors, Ibadan South West LGA, Hon Lateef Ige, PDP Vice Chairman, Ibadan South West LGA, alongside other party executives, Babaloja of Mapo Orita-Merin, Rasak Ademola, Chairman, Mapo Orita-Merin Community, Hon Kayode Abiodun Olayiwola, Councillor, Ward 1 (Host).

The project reflects a broader approach to development focused on practical interventions that improve livelihoods, strengthen local economies, and enhance community safety.
