When the sun sets over Ibadan’s historic Oja-Oba market, the streets have long been swallowed by shadows.

Traders would reluctantly pack up, and the hum of commerce would fade, leaving dark corners where safety and opportunity alike were scarce.

That scenario is changing, thanks to a bold intervention by Dr Debo Akande, who has facilitated the installation and commissioning of 22 solar-powered street lights along the bustling Mapo–Orita-Merin axis in Ibadan South West Local Government Area.

The lights do more than chase away darkness, they illuminate a vision for the market’s economic revival.

By extending trading hours, improving visibility, and enhancing public safety, Dr Akande’s initiative offered tangible benefits for the traders and residents who rely on the market’s vitality.

“Now we can stay longer to sell. Before, once it got dark, we had to close early,” said one market trader, reflecting the immediate impact of the project. Another resident added.

“The dark corners used to be a problem. Now everywhere is visible. It will help security a lot.”
Indeed, the initiative represents a dual triumph: it not only strengthens the economic potential of the market but also equips local vigilante groups and community members with the visibility needed to keep the area safe.
Dr Akande’s project exemplified a philosophy of development that is practical, visible, and responsive to everyday needs.
By installing solar street lights, he has not only improved immediate conditions but also signalled a broader commitment to stimulating local economies and empowering communities.
The lights, now casting a steady glow across the Mapo–Orita-Merin corridor, are more than infrastructure, they are catalysts for opportunity.
Traders can operate longer, families feel safer, and the market’s pulse beats brighter into the evening hours.
Through initiatives like this, Dr Debo Akande demonstrates that development is most effective when it combines economic foresight with practical action. In Oja-Oba, darkness is no longer an obstacle, and the path forward, both literally and figuratively is illuminated.
