Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo on Thursday joined top dignitaries, traditional rulers, and admirers in Oyo Town to celebrate the 67th birthday of former senator, Monsurat Sunmonu.
The colourful event attracted political leaders, royal fathers and well-wishers, who gathered to honour Sunmonu’s contributions to public service, with many praising her humility, inclusive leadership style and integrity.
Speaking at the occasion, Makinde described the celebrant as a person of rare sincerity, noting that she is widely respected for her honesty and straightforward nature.
He also revealed the effort he made to attend the event, explaining that he departed Abuja shortly after 11 a.m., arrived through Ibadan Airport, and proceeded directly to Oyo town for the celebration.
“I had to adjust my schedule because she deserves to be celebrated,” the governor said.
The event, however, took a political turn when Makinde hinted that the candidates he would support in future elections would be made known before the end of May.
In a light-hearted remark, he noted that he would not be contesting the Oyo governorship again, drawing cheers from supporters, particularly women, who chanted in Yoruba, “Ibi oba lo lan lo,” meaning, “Wherever you go, we will follow you.”
Makinde offered prayers for Sunmonu, wishing her continued good health, long life, and prosperity.
