The Honourable Minister of Power has formally tendered his resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, announcing his intention to contest the forthcoming governorship election in Oyo State.

In a letter dated 22 April 2026 and addressed to the President, the Minister stated that his resignation will take effect on 30 April 2026. He explained that the notice period was intended to ensure a smooth and orderly transition at the Ministry of Power, headquartered in Abuja’s Maitama District.

A copy of the letter was also sent through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

In the correspondence, the Minister expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in his cabinet.

“It has been a rare honour to contribute to national development under your leadership and to play a role in advancing reforms in the power sector, one of the most critical foundations of Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic transformation,” he wrote.

He described his decision to step down as the culmination of a long-held political aspiration, tracing it back to 2016 during his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He further noted that he previously resigned from the CBN in 2018 in pursuit of the same ambition.

Citing provisions of the Amended Electoral Act 2026, which restricts public office holders from holding office while contesting elections, the Minister said his resignation was both necessary and in compliance with the law.

As of the time of filing this report, President Tinubu has not announced a successor or acting minister for the Ministry of Power.
Political observers say the Minister’s exit is likely to significantly reshape the dynamics of the upcoming Oyo State gubernatorial race, where he is expected to emerge as a major contender.
