Egbeda Local Government has reaffirmed its commitment to cultural preservation and tourism development with its active participation in the 2026 Oyo State Egungun Festival, held at the Liberty Stadium.

The Executive Chairman of Egbeda Local Government, Hon. Sanda Sikiru Oyedele, was represented at the colourful event by the Supervisor for Information, Culture and Tourism, Hon. Olaopa Michael Olufemi, alongside other dignitaries from across the state.

Speaking at the festival, Hon. Olaopa described the celebration as a significant cultural showcase of the Yoruba people, noting that the event—now branded as the “World Egungun Festival”—is strategically positioned to attract global attention and boost tourism. He emphasized that the festival reflects the richness of Yoruba heritage while creating opportunities for economic growth.

The two-day festival, which commenced on May 1 and concluded on May 2, 2026, featured a range of activities, including a grand finale and symposium, all aimed at promoting cultural values and strengthening the state’s economy.

Reiterating the vision behind the initiative, Hon. Oyedele noted that the Oyo State Government is leveraging the festival to preserve Yoruba traditions, generate revenue, and position Ibadan as a leading cultural tourism destination. He added that efforts are underway to secure global recognition for the festival, with a target of achieving UNESCO endorsement within the next six years.

Central to the celebration is the Egungun tradition, a revered aspect of Yoruba culture that honours ancestral spirits. The masquerade serves as a symbolic bridge between the living and the departed, reinforcing communal values and ancestral reverence.
