Political office holders and individuals have been warned against dragging the revered stool of the Olubadan of Ibadanland into political disagreements or making statements capable of undermining the dignity of the traditional institution.
The warning was issued by Mogaji Abass Oloko and Engr Abduljelyl Adekunle Karheem
(Mogaji Adanla) in response to recent comments by Dare Adeleke concerning the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, and the flag-off of the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road project.
The Mogajis urged Adeleke and other stakeholders to appreciate the contributions of the Olubadan to the development of Ibadanland rather than allow political differences to overshadow the revered traditional institution.
According to them, the flag-off of the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road project was an initiative of the Federal Government and was not organised by the Olubadan.
They therefore questioned why an appointee of the Oyo State Government would link the monarch to the Federal Government’s decision concerning the event.
The Mogajis said the Olubadan should instead be commended for facilitating development and attracting major projects to Ibadanland.
“Has any former Olubadan facilitated major development like what the present Olubadan is doing?” they asked.
They maintained that the present Olubadan deserves honour and celebration for his contributions to the development of Ibadanland, stressing that such efforts should be recognised and encouraged.
“Rather than condemn Kabiyesi over a Federal Government project, those who have the interest of Ibadanland at heart should appreciate the efforts being made to attract development to our city. The flag-off was the responsibility of the Federal Government, not the making of the Olubadan.”
They added: “The Olubadan stool belongs to all Ibadan indigenes and should not be dragged into political disagreements. Kabiyesi deserves respect and support for every genuine effort that brings development to Ibadanland.”
The Mogajis further stated that the Olubadan institution transcends political affiliations and should be accorded the dignity, respect and reverence befitting its status.
They urged political actors and government officials to avoid allowing political disagreements to overshadow the traditional institution, noting that the priority should remain the development and wellbeing of the people of Ibadanland.
The traditional title holders also called for constructive engagement among stakeholders, saying political differences should not become a reason to undermine the importance and dignity of the Olubadan stool.
They said Ibadanland would benefit more when traditional institutions, government and political stakeholders work together to attract development and improve the welfare of residents.
The Mogajis reiterated their appreciation of Oba Ladoja’s contributions to the growth and development of Ibadanland and called on stakeholders to support initiatives capable of bringing meaningful development to the ancient city.
