The Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, has formally declared his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship, marking a significant moment in the state’s evolving political landscape.
The declaration was made during a live broadcast of BCOS’ Gbagede Oselu programme, where Dr Adeniran outlined his vision for inclusive governance, sustainable development and people-centred leadership.
His announcement came as the first public declaration of gubernatorial ambition by an appointee of Governor Seyi Makinde, drawing keen attention from political stakeholders and residents across the state.
Speaking during the broadcast, Dr. Adeniran said his decision was driven by a desire to deepen development and strengthen community cohesion in Oyo State.
“I believe Oyo State deserves leadership that listens, plans strategically and delivers measurable progress for all communities. My aspiration is anchored on service, partnership with the private sector and policies that will uplift education, infrastructure and the economy.”
He emphasised the importance of collaboration between government and citizens, noting that development thrives where trust and shared responsibility exist.
“Government alone cannot achieve all that our people deserve. By fostering strong community bonds and encouraging responsible private participation, we can accelerate growth and create opportunities for our youth,” Dr Adeniran added.
Political observers noted that his declaration introduced a fresh dynamic into the race, particularly against the backdrop of earlier assurances by the governor that the ruling party would unveil its preferred successor at a later date.
While some public office holders have chosen to remain silent about their political ambitions, Dr. Adeniran’s move is being viewed as a demonstration of confidence and conviction.
Recall that Governor Seyi Makinde had publicly declared that his successor will be announced in January 2026.
He made the declaration at the 2025 edition of his Omituntun Ramadan lecture where he urged a prominent Mogaji in Ibadanland, Abass Oloko not to remove his billboard at Isale Alfa till he announced his would be successor in January 2026.
Ever since Makinde made the remark, no elected officials from PDP in the state has the effrontery to declare gubernatorial ambitions let alone his appointees.
With the declaration of Dr Adeniran, other elected officials and appointees may summon courage to declare their 2027 ambitions.
