Against all odds, Miss Wasilat Adegoke, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Oyo State, who was once portrayed as an unlikely leader and questioned of her capabilities by cynics who saw little promise in her appointment by the dynamic Governor Seyi Makinde, has now become the “game-changer” who has redefined leadership and narratives in youth and sports.
Just as many doubted the governor prior to his emergence, the popular slogan, “Seyi o Sekan ri, e je o se,” resonated with the few who believed in his vision. Today, he is celebrated as the “Builder of Modern Oyo State,” not even the “Architect.”
Adegoke’s remarkable journey mirrors this transformation. Her commitment to empowering the youths and revitalising sports in Oyo State has turned skepticism into admiration.
As the philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” Adegoke has decisively chosen the path of empowerment, leading her ministry to significant milestones that resonate with her vision and that of the governor for a brighter future.
In her tenure, Adegoke has taken concrete steps to uplift and equip the youths. The establishment of Oyo State’s premier female football team, Pacesetter Queens FC, marked a historic achievement that underscored her dedication to sports and gender equality.
During the unveiling, she expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde for his unwavering support, stating, “His Excellency’s dedication to empowering female athletes has made this milestone possible.”
With a strong leadership team in place, including experienced coaches and trainers, the club is set to make a significant impact in Nigerian women’s football.
Moreover, Adegoke has spearheaded a youths empowerment programme that has trained hundreds in entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and personal development.
This initiative has not only equipped the youths with essential skills but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration. The first-ever Oyo Youths Summit gathered over 5,000 participants, creating a vibrant platform for mentorship and growth.
In agriculture, Adegoke, with the support of Governor Makinde, introduced over 2,000 youths to agribusiness, providing necessary training and resources.
This initiative reflected her holistic approach to youths empowerment, ensuring that young people are prepared for diverse opportunities in the modern economy.
In the realm of sports, Adegoke has revitalised Oyo State’s presence at national competitions. Under her leadership, the state participated in the National Youth Games for the first time, achieving a commendable seventh position. In addition, the ministry has expanded its focus from a handful of sports to 36, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity and excellence.
Adegoke’s collaborative efforts with NGOs and private organisations have provided technology-based scholarships and grants, further enriching the youth landscape.
The governor’s support for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) also reflected a broader commitment to the future of Oyo State’s young people.
Wasilat Adegoke’s journey exemplifies resilience, empowerment, and transformation. At just 29, she is a vibrant youth who continues to break barriers and inspire young people. Her leadership serves as a powerful reminder that with vision and dedication, even the most formidable challenges can be conquered.
In a world where stereotypes often dictate potential, Adegoke stands as a testament to the power of belief and action. Her journey from underdog to icon is not just a personal victory; it is a movement that invites everybody to envision a future where every young person can thrive.
The legacy she is building in Oyo State will undoubtedly echo through generations, shaping a brighter tomorrow for the youths of today.
