Many men have toured this earthly planet, but here comes a figure who has dedicated his entire life to the service of humanity. Born on June 29, 1936, in the heart of Ibarapa, the great Adepoju would go ahead to leave an indelible mark on his people. His life is a personification of service, which stands to buttress the adage: a fruit does not fall too far from its tree, just like his father; the late Pa. Adepoju.
Growing up in the ancient region of Ibarapa, his formative years were spent understanding the needs of his community; this understanding would later drive his numerous contributions to the Ibarapa people and beyond. With a passion for education, he pursued his studies diligently, culminating in his eventual leadership roles in academia and the civil service. His passion for education earned him a doctoral degree, even at the apogee of his career. This fondness for knowledge, the octogenarian has persistently demonstrated, even up to this moment.
His career took a significant turn when he became the Rector of The Polytechnic Ibadan, serving from 1981 to 1988. During his tenure, history and records have it that he was instrumental in the creation of satellite campuses in Esa-Oke, Saki, Iree and Eruwa. These campuses, initially part of the Polytechnic,Ibadan, have since grown to become full-fledged tertiary institutions, providing educational opportunities and development to countless students across the region. Indeed, no one can predict the outcome of a seed sown with pure intention.
One of his most cherished achievements that reverberates in every nook and cranny of Ibarapa Land even after four decades was his commitment to admitting a substantial number of students of Ibarapa descent into The Polytechnic, Ibadan. This effort ensured that many from his homeland had access to quality education, empowering them to contribute significantly to their communities, Nigeria and the world at large.
After his impactful but glorious tenure at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, he retired from active civil service in 1991 as the General Manager of the Agricultural Credit Corporation of Oyo State. His dedication to public service did not end there; he continued to influence and serve in various capacities.
As the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Nasarawa State, he played a crucial role in ensuring fair and transparent elections. His political influence extended to being a Pioneer National Executive Member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 1998, where he helped shape the party’s direction during its formative years that ushered in the beginning of our democracy and former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Pa Amos is no doubt a man in his own class; he wasted no time with any opportunity he had to better the lives of the sons and daughters of Ibarapa Land. He was appointed as a full-time commissioner at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Immigration, Prisons, and Civil Defence Board. In his role in this capacity, he facilitated the employment of many Ibarapa indigenes in these government parastatals. His efforts extended beyond just positions of power; he worked tirelessly to uplift his people, creating opportunities and fostering growth within his community.
As a father, his legacy continues through his children, who have followed in his footsteps of service and leadership. His son, Hon. (Dr.) Anthony Adebayo Adepoju, serves as a member of the House of Representatives, representing Ibarapa Central and Ibarapa North Federal Constituency in the 10th Assembly, wearing his father’s shoes of dedicated service to humanity, and another son, Mr. Adekunle Adepoju, is the Special Adviser on General Services to the Executive Governor of Osun State.
Pa Adepoju, on October 13, 2023, in a ceremony that was well-attended by the crème de la crème in society, was recognised with the title of Asiwaju of Igboora Land, continuing the family tradition of leadership and community service.
On his 88th birthday, the Ibarapa community and beyond reflect on his numerous achievements and contributions. His life’s work has left an indelible mark on the fabric of society, demonstrating that a fruit indeed does not fall too far from its tree, as were the numerous achievements of his father, Odofin Samuel Adepoju. His legacy is proof of the power of native intelligence, dedication, education, and an uncommon commitment to one’s people.
As the Asiwaju of Igboora, he continues to inspire future generations, raising the bar of excellence and fostering a united Ibarapa land through his ageless words of advice that strengthen the bond of cohesive community that Ibarapa is known for. His story is one of perseverance, leadership, and an enduring connection to his roots. His life serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path for others to follow in service to their community and country.
Happy 88th Birthday, Grandpa!!!
