JUST IN: Ibadan to Host World Feather Weight Bout 57 Years After

Makinde Committed to Sports Development- SSG

The World Feather Weight Championship bout between a Nigerian -Ridwan Oyekola, aka Scorpion and an Argentile – Lucas Matias Montesino, will hold in Ibadan on 27th December, 2020.

Olawale Okuniyi, the Chairman,Local Organising Committee; World Boxing Federation (WBF), made this known on Tuesday, when he led other members of the committee and the bout fighter – Scorpion, to the office of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state.

Okuniyi noted that the last time Ibadan hosted such bout was on Aug 10, 1963 at Liberty Stadium, declaring that another bout was going to be held 57 years after.

He said hosting such global event in Ibadan under  Makinde, who he described as a Sports’ lover was the best thing to happen during his(governor) tenure.

According to the LOC chairman, the state has a lot to gain in hosting this event because it would place the state on the centre of attraction, apart from the economic benefits the state would derive from the bout.

He noted that the state government have passion for Sports development, asserting that its contributions toward Youth and Sports sector was commendable.

Collaborating the remarks of the chairman, Rafiu Oladipo – the LOC Co- chairman, said “the significant of this match is that if such a thing happened 57 years ago and we are going to have it here again; I thing the governor, government and the people of Oyo state should be happy.

“The whole world will be focusing on Ibadan, Oyo state during and after the fight, there is going to be a lot of financial benefits for the state, because people will come far and near across the world for the bout.

“I believe this is a fight that we must all support and I want to plead for the support of the state government and all the people of Oyo state so that our son – Scorpion, can win the title belt.” Oladipo stated.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde, the Secretary to the State Government – Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun, said the present administration “is so committed to the development of Sports in the state.”

Adeosun assured the LOC team that government would continue to give necessary support for the success of Oyekola during the championship bout.
