In the dynamic landscape of governance, where vision and execution define leadership, Governor Seyi Makinde has once again distinguished himself as a trailblazer in Oyo State’s energy sector.

Through his relentless commitment to infrastructural development, renewable energy expansion, and strategic partnerships, Governor Makinde has successfully positioned Oyo State on the path to energy sufficiency.

Under his administration, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, ably led by Commissioner Seun Ashamu, has become a powerhouse of transformation, bringing light to communities, industries, and public facilities across the state.

Since assuming office in 2019, Governor Makinde has demonstrated an unshakable resolve to overhaul the state’s energy landscape.

One of his landmark achievements is the Light-Up Oyo Initiative, a revolutionary project that has illuminated over 250 kilometers of roads across the state using tri-brid technology, which combines national grid electricity, an uninterrupted power supply (UPS), and gas.

This initiative has significantly enhanced nighttime security, boosted business activities, and increased overall economic productivity.

Additionally, Governor Makinde has spearheaded the upgrade of key power infrastructure, including collaborations with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to enhance the capacity of substations in Ibadan.

The expansion at Jericho and Alakia substations has improved power supply reliability, reducing the energy deficit that previously plagued residents and businesses.

These efforts underscore his administration’s unwavering commitment to providing sustainable energy solutions.

Recognizing the need for sustainable and eco-friendly energy*, the Makinde-led administration has championed solar-hybrid mini-grids, ensuring that off-grid communities gain access to stable electricity. Over 25 solar mini-grids have been developed across Oyo State, with the government fully funding projects in Otefon, Agbaruru, Ajia, and Arowomole.

These interventions have transformed rural healthcare facilities, schools, and markets, driving socio-economic growth.

Moreover, 21 primary healthcare centers now enjoy uninterrupted power supply through solar installations—a testament to Governor Makinde’s foresight in integrating energy solutions with essential public services.

By prioritizing green energy, his administration is not only bridging the power gap but also aligning Oyo State with global best practices in renewable energy adoption.

Governor Makinde’s vision for energy sufficiency has materialized through the construction of an 11MW hybrid power plant in Ibadan.

This ambitious project is set to provide stable electricity to key government institutions, including the state secretariat, hospitals, and other public facilities.

By reducing reliance on the national grid, this initiative will bolster efficiency and service delivery across critical sectors.

Furthermore, the $100 million partnership with Shell Nigeria Gas marks another milestone in the state’s energy transformation.

This agreement will facilitate the construction of a Pressure Reduction and Metering Station (PRMS) and gas pipelines, ensuring affordable and reliable gas supply to industries.

Under Governor Makinde’s leadership, Oyo State is not just consuming energy but actively shaping its energy future.

While Governor Makinde deserves high accolades for his bold energy reforms, Hon. Seun Ashamu, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, also deserves commendation for his unwavering dedication to executing the governor’s vision.

His strategic leadership has played a pivotal role in implementing key projects, ensuring that policies translate into tangible benefits for Oyo residents.

Commissioner Ashamu’s ability to drive partnerships, oversee project execution, and advocate for sustainable energy policies has reinforced the state’s progress in the power sector.

His contributions have complemented Governor Makinde’s grand vision, making Oyo a model for energy transformation in Nigeria.

Governor Seyi Makinde has set an unprecedented standard in energy governance, proving that with visionary leadership, sustainable policies, and the right team, power shortages can become a thing of the past.

His administration’s achievements in infrastructure development, renewable energy expansion, independent power projects, and industrial partnerships clearly indicate that Oyo State is on the brink of energy sufficiency.

With the continued efforts of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, under the capable leadership of Commissioner Seun Ashamu, Governor Makinde’s legacy as a transformational leader in the energy sector is already cemented.

As Oyo State continues its march towards energy security, one thing remains certain – Governor Seyi Makinde is the architect of a brighter, more prosperous future for all.
