Oyo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Barrister Seun Ashamu has explained the benefit of the newly signed Electricity Regulatory law in the state.
Ashamu while answering questions on Fresh FM Situation Room anchored by Mayor Isaac Brown this Thursday and monitored by Daily News NG, said the commission is designed to independently generate, transmit and distribute electricity to people of Oyo State.
Speaking further on the electricity regulatory Commission, “this will unbundle the present DISCOS and allow each state to have its own Disco that will be efficiently delivered to the people of the state.”
“As we know, power shareholding of Nigeria is 40% during the privatization process. And with that, each State will take its own commensurate shareholding and make investors invest and give their maximum best.”
On how the government can make electricity work in Nigeria, two things are involved according to the commissioner, cast iron contract and liquidity availability. Also sufficient meters which implies that each house must have a meter for proper metering.
Corroborating his statement, Ashamu explained that the Electricity Bill will help the state to stand on its own in generating, transmitting and distributing electricity and ensure energy security.
“As we speak, our government has been able to build 25 mini grids serving people of Oyo State. The served community are paying for the uninterrupted services they’re enjoying. Electricity is utility and there is a need to pay for services rendered.”
“With the bill, we will be able to expand through major power stations we are about to commission soon.”
Ashamu added that the government has commenced electricity enlightenment to teach people on energy management.
“Major companies are applying to generate lots of megawatts within the state to ease the generation power of Oyo State.”
