Oyo Independent Power Project Set to Catalyze Industrialization of Ibadan

“‘Light’. This word means different things to different people. But when the average Nigerian talks about ‘light,’ they mean electricity – power supply.” – Governor Seyi Makinde

In a momentous occasion back in 2021, Governor Seyi Makinde led the flag-off ceremony for the construction of an 11MW Independent Power Project (IPP) in Ibadan, the bustling capital city of Oyo State.

Fast forward to the present, as the project nears completion in a few weeks’ time, its significance in propelling the industrialization of Ibadan remains paramount.

Governor Makinde’s visionary leadership paved the way for the initiation of the Oyo Independent Power Project, which represents a cornerstone in the state’s efforts to bolster economic growth and development. With its hybrid power plant combining gas-fired and solar energy generation components, the IPP is poised to revolutionize energy distribution within the region.

The project, executed by Elektron Energy on a Build-Operate-Transfer model at a cost of N8 billion, is on the verge of realization. Once operational, it will cater to the energy needs of government facilities, healthcare centers, educational institutions, and public spaces in the vicinity of the Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi, and its environs.

As envisioned by Governor Makinde during the flag-off ceremony, the Oyo Independent Power Project will not only provide essential electricity supply but also serve as a catalyst for industrialization. With reliable power infrastructure in place, businesses in Ibadan will have the necessary energy resources to thrive and expand their operations.

The project’s imminent completion is a testament to the state government’s unwavering commitment to fostering innovation, progress, and prosperity. It represents a significant milestone in the journey towards transforming Ibadan into a vibrant economic hub, attracting investment, creating job opportunities, and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

As the countdown to the project’s commissioning begins, anticipation mounts for the positive impact it will have on the industrial landscape of Ibadan. With abundant energy resources at their disposal, businesses and industries in the region are poised to unleash their full potential, driving forward the vision of a thriving and dynamic Ibadan.
