Table Shaker: Is Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin Positioned to Rise as Makinde’s Successor in 2027?

As the political landscape of Oyo State evolves, the question of succession looms large, particularly surrounding the underground networking by Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, the current Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and Chairman, Nigeria Speakers Conference. Oyo Amebo writes.

With eight years of experience and his role as Chairman of the Nigeria Conference of Speakers, Ogundoyin has emerged as a cerebral and politically astute figure, embodying the youthful vigor that Governor Seyi Makinde seeks in a successor.

His ability to navigate complex political landscapes while delivering on his promises showcases a level of maturity and insight that is commendable, making him a standout leader in the state.

Ogundoyin’s loyalty to Makinde is palpable. The governor’s strategic investments in Ibarapa East, Eruwa, from the Eruwa Agribusiness Hub to the upgrade of the Eruwa Health Centre and the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Ibadan-Eruwa road, suggested a deliberate effort to consolidate support within Ogundoyin’s constituency.

This focus on development underscores Ogundoyin’s commitment to progress, positioning him as a champion for his people.

His advocacy for local initiatives and ability to galvanize resources reflected a genuine dedication to improving the lives of his constituents, further solidifying his reputation as an effective and compassionate leader.

However, this close association with the governor may also fuel skepticism among voters who question whether he can transcend the label of being a “stooge” for the administration.  Rt Hon Ogundoyin hosted some former local government Chairmen across the state, he urged them to remain committed to the PDP. It was gathered that the nod was given by the “highest authority ” before the meeting with the former council bosses.

Critics are quick to highlight Ogundoyin’s Achilles’ heels. His non-Muslim identity may alienate certain voter blocs, especially in a state where religious affiliations play a significant role in political allegiance. After 8 years of Seyi Makinde, a Christian, will he anoint another Christian as his successor?

Moreover, Ibarapa’s perception as an extension of Ibadan could dilute his appeal, raising doubts about his ability to galvanise support beyond the confines of his immediate constituency. As the PDP gears up for a potential showdown, the question remains: can Ogundoyin rise above these challenges, or will he be seen as merely a puppet of the executive?

Adding to the intrigue is the legacy of former Governor Rashidi Ladoja. Ogundoyin’s ascent was facilitated by Ladoja’s political machinery following the death of former speaker who is also from Ibarapa, late Rt. Segun Adeyemo.

Will Ladoja, a formidable player in Oyo politics, endorse Ogundoyin’s candidacy, or will he back an alternative candidate that could shake the foundations of the PDP?

This uncertainty looms large as traditional party leaders weigh their options in a rapidly evolving political landscape.

Financial resources are another critical factor. As the race heats up, questions about Ogundoyin’s financial backing compared to influential figures like Odidiomo, Beulah and the rest of other gladiators may emerge.

Can he muster the financial clout needed to compete effectively, or will he falter in the face of well-funded opponents? The stakes are high, and the answers to these questions could tilt the balance of power within the PDP.

As we look ahead to 2027, the Oyo political scene is rife with speculation. Will Ogundoyin emerge as a unifying force capable of rallying the party and the electorate, or will he become a casualty of intra-party rivalries?

The drama is just beginning, and the next few months before Makinde tells Abass Oloko whose billboard is to be erected at Isale Alfa area of Ibadan, will be crucial in determining whether Ogundoyin can transform his perceived weaknesses into strengths. His past achievements and commitment to public service suggest that he has the potential to lead with integrity and vision.

In this high-stakes game of political chess, one thing is certain: the stage is set for a showdown that could reshape the state’s political landscape.

Will Ogundoyin leverage his connections and experience to claim the governorship, or will he find himself outmaneuvered by more seasoned players?

The countdown to 2027 has begun, and the eyes of Oyo State are keenly watching as the drama unfolds.

Makinde may anoint Ogundoyin for being a loyal Speaker.
