    What Raphael Afonja Contributed to Makinde’s Administration

    It is no more news that Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde this Tuesday sacked his erstwhile Commissioner For Works, Transport and Public Works, Professor Raphael Afonja. The news of Afonja’s sack caught other Commissioners unaware. The State Government is yet to inform residents of Oyo what led to his sack.

    Here are some of his high moments in his short spell as a Commissioner in the Ministry of Works and Transport.

    MONIYA/IJAIYE/ISEYIN ROAD

    “The Oyo State Government said that it had approved the total reconstruction of the 65-kilometre Moniya/Ijaiye/Iseyin Road, linking the food basket of the state.

    The state’s Commissioner for Infrastructure, Works and Transport, Prof. Raphael Afonja, who disclosed this at the end of the state executive council meeting, said that the reviewed road reconstruction work would cost N9.9 billion.

    LIGHT-UP IBADAN PROJECT

    The Commissioner for Works in Oyo State, Professor Raphael Afonja, stated that the delivery of the smart LED streetlights infrastructure across some strategic routes within Ibadan metropolis was one of the achievements of the Governor Makinde administration towards improving security and infrastructure in the State.

    According to Afonja, the project approved by the Governor is worth N1.772 billion, having gone through public procurement due process and due consideration of the Executive Council, includes replacement of the existing underperforming street light fittings with improved modern technology street lights fitting and installation of new ones at the strategic routes.

    The commissioner added that project’s major features would also include deployment of an improved smart LED technology street lighting, which is first of its kind in Oyo State in terms of the magnitude of deployment, efficiency and financial commitment.

    LIGHT-UP OYO STATE PROJECT IN THE 5 GEOPOLITICAL ZONES, TO COVER 70 ROADS

    Oyo State government, on Tuesday, approved the commencement of the Light-Up Oyo State project, which is to cover 70 roads and 223.42 kilometres across the five geopolitical zones of the state.

    The state’s Commissioner for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Rapheal Afonja, who made the disclosure while briefing newsmen at the end of the state’s Executive Council meeting, said that 70 roads across the five zones of the state will be captured in the second phase of the Light-Up Oyo Project.

    REHABILITATION OF TWO DUMPSITES IN IBADAN

    The Commissioner for Works and Transport, Raphael Afonja said the state’s executive council has approved the award of the contract for the rehabilitation of two dumpsites in Ibadan as part of the new Solid Waste Management Architecture launched by Governor Seyi Makinde recently.

    INAUGURATION OF PARK MANAGERS

    The Oyo State Government has inaugurated the Park Managers in 33 Local Governments across the State.

    Also inaugurated on Monday are the two Disciplinary Committees which are to intervene whenever conflicts arise between the Oyo State Government and Park Managers on the operations of the parks.

    The Oyo State Commissioner for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Professor Raphael Afonja, who inaugurated the Park Managers and the Disciplinary Committees at the Conference Hall of the Ministry, said that the new Park Management System, PMS, would bring sanity in the management of motor parks in the State.

    Afonja, who further clarified that the Park Managers will be coordinated by a Consultant to ensure compliance with the terms of reference, while the Disciplinary Committees would intervene where there are issues between the State Government and the Park Managers, stated that the new Park Management System (PMS) would aid the efforts of the State Government to double the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) inherited from the previous administration.

    FOUR MODERN BUS TERMINALS FOR IBADAN

    The Commissioner for Public work and Transport, Raphael Afonja said that the flag-off signified the commencement of the construction of state-of-the-art modern bus terminals to be built at four different locations in Ibadan.

    He said the terminals, which are to be built at Iwo Road, New Ife Road, Challenge and Ojoo areas, will be equipped with facilities such as passenger waiting and ticketing offices, drivers’ lounge, parking facilities, shopping facilities, eateries, ATM galleries and other conveniences.
