Bisi Ilaka Mourns Former Minister of Labour Chief Ajibola Afonja

 

Chief Luqman Oyebisi Ilaka, the former Chief of Staff to Governor Seyi Makinde, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Ajibola Afonja, the former Minister of Labour and erstwhile chairman of First Bank Nigeria. Chief Afonja passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.

In a condolence message issued and signed on Sunday, Ilaka described Afonja as a father and mentor who always supported and stood by him. He remarked that the death of the renowned banker and entrepreneur is a personal loss to him and a significant loss to Oyo Kingdom, Nigeria, and the business world.

Ilaka, who holds the title of Ladilu of Oyo Kingdom, praised Chief Afonja as “a father, leader, and adviser,” highlighting his unparalleled contributions to the development of Oyo Kingdom and his steadfast support for youth advancement.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our dear father, friend, and leader, Chief Ajibola Afonja,” Ilaka stated. “Baba was not just a visionary leader but one of the brightest minds in Nigeria. His impact on Oyo Kingdom, our nation, and beyond will be remembered forever. My heart mourns.”

“Baba Ajibola Afonja’s contributions to banking and the financial sector in Africa were unparalleled. He was a staunch believer in the Nigerian solution. His dedication and passion for progress inspired us all.

Today, I mourn not just a leader but a true friend and adviser. Nigeria and indeed Oyo Kingdom have lost a remarkable soul. Chief Ajibola Afonja “was a complete one off…the mould was broken when he was made. My life was greatly enriched with his presence in it, Rest in peace”

“In this difficult time, my thoughts are with his family, and we pray for strength and grace. Lastly, Ilaka stated ” I urge all to take solace in the rich legacy Chief Ajibola Afonja has left us with.”
