Direct Remittance of Oil Revenue to Federation Account Amounts to Executive Overreach Says Dr Oyebade Oyedepo
The Executive Order on Direct Remittance of Oil Revenue to Federation Account by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently has been described as Executive Overreach.
This opinion was expressed by Dr Prince Oyebade Oyedepo when he featured on a Current Affairs Program titled, Crest Breakfast Show held today Anchored by Ace Broadcasters, Damilola Amoo and Samuel Fatokun.
According to Dr Oyebade Oyedepo, the Executive has no power to take over the legislation of laws for good governance.
In his opinion, the Petroleum Industry Act, 2010 took more than ten years to be passed hence it’s provisions should be respected.
If the Executive has the intention of strengthening it to curb corruption and ensure accountability, they should take it back to the national assembly to do the needful to amend it to reflect their wishes.
The Executive has the right to send in executive bill to correct any perceived anomaly than to do so indirectly through executive orders.
The President can easily achieve his mission of ensuring easy passage of the amendments since the majority of the legislators are members of his party.
He opined that if executive orders prevails over legislations duly passed by the national assembly, it means we no longer have checks and balances in place.
In his opinion, this is not right in any developing economy.
