Electricity Meters are to be Distributed Free of Charge – Minister of Power Warns

The Federal Government has prohibited electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and installers from charging consumers for electricity meters.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, stated that meters procured under the World Bank–funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP) will be distributed and installed at no cost to consumers.

He warned that any DisCo official or installer found demanding payment will face prosecution, emphasizing that the directive applies to all electricity customers, irrespective of their tariff band.

Adelabu also announced that about 500,000 smart meters have already arrived, with plans underway to import a total of 3.4 million meters nationwide.

He added that a complaint desk will be set up to enable consumers report cases of extortion.
