FRIDAY EVENING WITH AMOFIN BEULAH ADEOYE (VII)

Life often unfolds before us in its sweeping and complex setting, filled with moments of triumph, sorrow, joy, and turmoil. None of its faces or phases is predictable by anyone. So, when I have quiet moments to myself, I do ponder on the compound human experience, and marvel at its depth and diversity. The ebbs and flows, successes and setbacks – all, I believe, shape our various different and unique stories, molds us with resilience and in character. As well, something strikes me from my reflection on the majestic nature of life, the reality of knowing that there are varied sources of human emotions and experiences, – a shimmering of feelings that make us human.

Last week, October 19, at the Women Under 17 World Cup ongoing in Dominican Republic, Nigeria’s Flamingos secured a resounding 4-0 victory against Ecuador. Chidi Harmony, Nigeria’s talented attacker, won the Player of the Match award. But the victory wasn’t as personally pleasing as what happened afterwards. I watched Chidi’s post-match interview from a reflective and very compassionate lens, it offered a glimpse into genuine joy; she thanked teammates, coaches, and Nigerians for their absolute support, – all in an obviously glowing and straight-from-the-heart tone. I found her unbridled enthusiasm very infectious, it revealed the significance of a collective triumph and celebration. I believe the excitement in her voice should be seen as such by all fans worldwide.

A few days later, the girls defeated the host country again, overcoming an intimidating stadium-full of Dominican Republic supporters, which also felt differently in its own way, but, Chidi’s earlier reaction sparked introspection about the different moments that bring joy and meaning to our lives. For her, the 4-0 victory against Ecuador represented a career milestone, a proof to dedication, perseverance, and teamwork. Others find happiness in different pursuits – a breathtaking sunset, a loved one’s warm smile, a personal (little or not so little) achievement, an handshake, or a friend’s wave from distance. There is a common thread that these unique moments share: they bring solace, comfort, and purpose. They remind us that the beauty of life lies in its simplicity, and in the accomplishments that some people may find not such a “big deal”.

As a sports enthusiast, I’ve experienced the thrill of victory and fraternity. Anytime I’m in the stadium to watch Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Oyo State, and they got their way into the net, I’ve shared in the collective euphoria, laughing and chanting with fellow fans, – sometimes, unconsciously finding myself up on the seat in jubilation, – aferall, who says there is any decorum to observe when one find joy in what is loved?

Though Chidi’s experience was uniquely hers, but I understand the depth of her emotions because I have lived in those moments before. Not left unsaid the electric atmosphere in stadiums, and the pride in representing one’s nation. Important to also note that sports have the power to unite, inspire, and provide economic opportunities as a vital sector for Nigeria’s growth and development, – I’d love to address this some other day.

So, in the midst life’s challenges, especially Nigeria’s economic woes, finding joy may seem daunting. Yet, if we look inward and around us, we’ll discover numerous sources of comfort. Maybe a child’s carefree laughter, a grateful recipient’s of our benevolence heartfelt “thank you,” a friend’s humorous anecdote, or a loved one’s gentle touch or compliment, – all offer some solace. Even in war-torn environments, resilience and hope prevail, and serve as drop of light. These moments just remind us that joy is not solely defined by grand achievements.

Research has shown us the profound mental health benefits of gratitude, reflection, and social connections. If we focuse on life’s positives, it strengthens resilience and promotes overall well-being. Acknowledging and sharing joy alone create a chain reaction, and inspires others to do the same. This collective upliftment is crucial in addressing the complexities and challenges of life. And I think practicing mindfulness, empathy, and kindness can transform our lives beyond how we can possibly imagine.

Friends, please be reminded that life is filled with many moments; triumph, sorrow, joy, and growth. We should explore its depths, cherish every personal or collective moment of triumph, no matter how small they may seem. We must strive to resist getting entangled in negativity. Wars, economic woes, crises, or any toxicity can be very overwhelming, but we must find balance and perspective in the midst of it all. If we share joy, reflect, and support one another, we’d have created a richer and more compassionate world for ourselves.

If you notice, I often greet you and everyone with a gentle smile, and convey a sense of mutuality and reassurance. It’s my personal message and reminder to you that, despite all the challenges we face, every cloud has a silver lining, – and unarguably, hope and optimism can carry us through the storms of life.

I believe you’ve got me, – I am with you every step of the way, too. Please enjoy your weekend.
