Large Crowd at Oriyomi’s Oyo Governorship Declaration Sparks Controversy Over Authentic Grassroots Support

An Ibadan-based media entrepreneur and philanthropist, Oriyomi Hamzat, has declared his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship in the 2027 general election, an announcement that has attracted attention not only for the size of the crowd in attendance but also for questions surrounding the composition of his supporter base.

The declaration, reported by Goalpoachernews, took place at the Liberty Stadium, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, and drew a large and tumultuous crowd that filled the venue.

Goalpoachernews reports that the atmosphere reflected his popularity and the affection he enjoys among many supporters, reinforcing perceptions of his strong grassroots mobilisation.

Oriyomi, who is the founder of Agidigbo FM, Ibadan, is widely recognised for his media influence and philanthropic activities, which have earned him visibility and goodwill across communities.

Many of those present at the event openly expressed support for his ambition, describing him as a figure with a people-centred approach.

However, observations by Goalpoachernews at the declaration monitored on Hamzat’s Radio indicated that a number of supporters were mobilised from towns outside Oyo State, including Iwo, Ikire, Ikoyi, Apomu Gbongan among others as announced by the compere (MCs) at the venue.

Beyond questions of voting rights, the development has prompted debate among political observers over whether the crowd size genuinely reflects organic support within Oyo State, or whether it was significantly bolstered by mobilisation from outside the state.

Political analysts who spoke with Goalpoachernews however, noted that governorship contests are ultimately determined by registered voters within the state, and that claims of widespread grassroots backing are often measured not only by turnout at public events but by the depth and authenticity of support across local government areas.

They however commended Hamzat for representing a genuine third force that could spring surprise in the forthcoming elections in 2027.

Meanwhile, as the 2027 election cycle approaches, attention is expected to shift from crowd numbers at declarations to issues such as voter registration, local structures, and the ability of aspirants to command sustained support among eligible voters across Oyo State.
