Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration is redefining Oyo State’s energy landscape, transforming it into a powerhouse of innovation and industrial growth.

Through strategic investments, forward-thinking policies, and groundbreaking infrastructure projects, Oyo State is rapidly emerging as the energy hub of Southwest Nigeria.

Makinde’s vision is clear: to establish Oyo as a self-sufficient, investor-friendly, and technologically advanced state in the energy sector.

This bold approach is not only enhancing power supply within the state but also attracting industries, fostering job creation, and positioning Oyo as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.

A cornerstone of Oyo State’s energy strategy is the establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Energy Innovation at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso.

This initiative, in collaboration with the Finnish consortium Soprano PLC, aims to provide training and certifications in energy generation and solid minerals development.

The Centre is poised to incubate energy innovations utilizing local resources, produce energy equipment for both local and international markets, and create job opportunities within the state.

To address electricity distribution challenges, Oyo State has initiated the development of 40 mini power grids designed to complement the national grid.

These grids aim to supply electricity to rural communities and government establishments, promoting industrialization and reducing business operational costs.

Additionally, the state is implementing approximately 250 kilometers of public lighting projects to enhance security and extend economic activities in major markets.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Seun Ashamu, emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to decentralize power production and stimulate economic growth across the state.

In a bid to further strengthen energy sufficiency, Oyo State is advancing an 11MW Independent Power Project (IPP), comprising a 10MW gas-fired power generation component and a 1MW photovoltaic solar solution.

This project underscores the state’s commitment to a sustainable and diversified energy mix.

Collaborations with Shell Nigeria Gas Limited are also underway to extend gas pipeline infrastructure into the state, ensuring efficient gas supply for power generation and other applications.

The enactment of the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission Law represents a significant milestone in creating a conducive environment for private sector investment in the energy sector.

This legislative framework is designed to improve electricity supply, attract investors, enhance the state’s energy capacity, and foster economic growth.

Oyo State’s energy initiatives, under the leadership of Commissioner Seun Ashamu, have also extended to rural electrification and healthcare.

Solar-hybrid mini-grids have been installed in underserved rural communities, providing much-needed electricity and stimulating local economies.

Furthermore, the government has equipped 351 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) with solar-powered energy systems to preserve vaccines and power medical equipment, thereby improving healthcare delivery across the state.

Commissioner Seun Ashamu has been instrumental in driving these initiatives.

His vision extends beyond technical energy solutions to the socio-economic benefits that come with energy sufficiency.

By focusing on sustainable projects and fostering collaborations with international partners, Governor Makinde is positioning Oyo State as a model for energy innovation in the region.

Through these comprehensive and forward-thinking measures, Oyo State is making significant strides toward becoming a regional hub for energy innovation.

Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration’s energy blueprint is not only addressing immediate needs but also laying the foundation for future advancements in power generation, industrialization, and economic expansion.

Oyo State is no longer just a participant in Nigeria’s energy sector—it is setting the pace, attracting investors, and proving that with visionary leadership, sustainable energy solutions can drive real development.

Governor Seyi Makinde is not just making promises; he is delivering a future where Oyo stands tall as the regional hub for energy innovation.
