Oyo Assembly Lawmaker, Hon. Babalola Calls for Public E-Libraries in State Schools, LGAs

A lawmaker in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Abiodun Babalola, representing Ibadan Northeast Constituency 1, has proposed the construction of public e-libraries in schools and local government areas across Oyo State, in a significant move to enhance educational resources and community engagement

He moved the motion during the plenary session of the assembly, underscoring the vital role that libraries play as community hubs connecting individuals to information and to one another.

Hon. Babalola emphasised that libraries serve as safe spaces for young people, providing essential after-school support, including homework assistance, games, and book clubs.

He argued that they also offer computer lessons for adults, helping them remain engaged in an increasingly digital world, that the availability of library resources allows individuals to explore entrepreneurship, develop new skills, and gather information to launch business ideas or pursue new hobbies.

Recognising the transformative impact of the digital age on information access and learning, the motion calls for equipping educational institutions and communities with the necessary resources to thrive.

“Public e-libraries will provide students, teachers, and community members with access to a vast array of educational materials, such as e-books, academic journals, and multimedia resources. This access is expected to enhance learning outcomes and promote academic excellence.”

Hon. Babalola highlighted the importance of digital literacy, noting that public e-libraries will help bridge the digital divide by providing access to digital resources and technologies, saying the initiative is crucial for preparing individuals for the demands of the modern workforce.

The motion also pointed to the broader societal benefits of establishing public e-libraries, adding: “By serving as hubs for community engagement, these libraries can offer programs and services tailored to the diverse needs and interests of residents, fostering a culture of lifelong learning and personal development.”

However, Hon. Babalola observed that access to libraries promotes research and innovation, equipping researchers, entrepreneurs, and innovators with up-to-date information and resources that can stimulate economic growth.

He noted that many talented individuals in the community, who may lack formal education, could greatly benefit from the informal learning opportunities that e-libraries provide.

To realise this vision, the motion calls on the state government to collaborate with local authorities through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and the Community Development Agency.

Specifically, it urges the allocation of funds for the construction of public e-libraries and the establishment of partnerships with educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and private sector stakeholders to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of these initiatives.
