The Chairman Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare’s Board (Muslim Wings), Sheikh Hashim Atere, has lauded the Executive Governor of Oyo State, ‘Seyi Makinde’ for deeming Sheikh AbdulGaniy Abubakri Agbotomokekere, the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, deserving of recognition for his significant contributions to religious harmony in the state and his promotion of peace.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Monday, the Hajj Chairman commended the Governor’s approach and style of managing the state’s religious affairs by ensuring harmony among all adherents of faith.

He equally commended his penchant for religious harmony and support for religious freedom since he assumed office, as well as saluting his strong will to institute sense of equality among religions in the State.

According to the Saudi Arabia trained scholar, even though Governor Makinde is a Christian, he treats everyone equally and has been transparent in the selection of political office holders.

Sheikh Atere, who noted that Governor Makinde is not a discriminator, stated that even before assuming office, he had supported Islamic initiatives, such as hosting lectures during Ramadan and building several mosques for Muslims as a sign of his love for Islam.

He added that part of the philanthropic gesture of the Governor included distribution of Ramadan packages to Muslim clerics and Societies to cushion the effect of economic hardship and also as a form of reward from Almighty Allah in this sacred month.

While extending his congratulations to the Chief Imam, Sheikh Atere highlighted his outstanding contributions to humanity and dedicated endeavor in promoting peace in the state.

He added that his efforts in promoting religious tolerance and fostering better understanding have played a significant role in mitigating religious extremism and attacks among adherents of different faith.

“We sincerely extend our appreciation to His Excellency, Seyi Makinde, on this conferment of recognition bestowed on our spiritual father, the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh AbdulGaniy Abubakri Agbotomokekere.

“This recognition is a testament of his enormous contributions towards the development of Islam and the efforts in promoting religious tolerance and harmony in the state.

“I pray Almighty Allah continue to guide His Excellency and continue to give him the wisdom to pilot the affairs of the state.”

The Chief Imam of Ibadanland would be conferred the recognition award at the 10th anniversary of Omituntun Ramadan lecture on Saturday.
