By Oyo Amebo

Barr. Temilolu Seun Ashamu, in a remarkable display of youthful dynamism, has taken on the mantle of Commissioner for the Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, infusing the office with fresh perspectives drawn from his extensive experience in the Ministry of Energy.

Since his redeployment to the new ministry, Ashamu has become a driving force behind transformative environmental initiatives, positioning the ministry as a leader in climate action across the Southwest.

His recent address at the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Briefing showcased an ambitious vision that transcends traditional waste management, focusing instead on comprehensive reforms that enhance urban sustainability and ecological resilience.

Ashamu’s focus on transparency and innovation is pivotal in reshaping Oyo’s environmental landscape, fostering a cleaner, healthier state for both present and future generations.

Under the stewardship of Governor Seyi Makinde, environmental governance has emerged as a cornerstone of sustainable development, and Ashamu is at the forefront of this movement.

Highlighting the ministry’s proactive efforts, he proudly announced the planting of nearly 30,000 trees over the past six years and the revitalisation of 111 hectares of forest reserves. These initiatives serve a dual purpose: enhancing biodiversity and providing essential green spaces that enrich urban life.

In terms of climate resilience, Ashamu has overseen significant projects that address the pressing issue of flooding, including the desilting of 153 kilometres of drainage systems and the dredging of 18 flood-prone streams.

A standout achievement is the establishment of an early warning system in Ibadan, the first of its kind in Africa, which alerts residents to potential flooding, thereby enhancing community safety and preparedness.

This innovative approach exemplifies how technology can play a crucial role in environmental protection, reinforcing Oyo’s commitment to tackling climate challenges with forward-thinking solutions.

On the waste management front, Ashamu has implemented a transformative Private Sector Participation (PSP) reform, reorganising waste collection in Ibadan into 11 zonal clusters.

This restructuring has significantly improved service delivery and accountability, with over 190 licensed PSPs now operating under the ministry’s oversight.

Public awareness campaigns have educated residents about responsible waste disposal, leading to increased civic responsibility and action against illegal dumping.

Looking to the future, Ashamu envisions a comprehensive recycling system and expanded public engagement initiatives. His proactive stance encourages citizens to support registered PSPs while actively discouraging illegal waste disposal, reinforcing the notion that environmental stewardship is a collective responsibility.

Through enhanced tree-planting initiatives aimed at soil stabilisation and urban beautification, Ashamu aligns Oyo’s growth with the Sustainable Development Goals, promoting a greener, more sustainable future.

By prioritising collaboration and community involvement, Ashamu is not only addressing immediate environmental challenges but also laying the groundwork for a resilient ecological future.

His unwavering belief in the attainability of a greener world highlights the transformative potential of vision, innovation, and collective effort in fostering a healthier planet for all.
