Unmasking Makinde’s Successor: Is Dr Debo Akande in the Contest for Oyo 2027?
By Oyo Amebo
As the 2027 general election approaches, Oyo State finds itself at a critical juncture. Governor Seyi Makinde, currently navigating the complexities of his second term, must soon confront the daunting task of selecting a successor who can carry his vision forward after eight transformative years.

With political maneuvering already underway, potential candidates are keenly trying to curry favour from the governor, highlighting their achievements to convince him they are fit to lead Oyo into the next chapter.
Among the rising stars in this political landscape of Governor Seyi Makinde is the Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA), Dr. Debo Akande.

His impactful work in revitalising agribusiness aligns closely with the governor’s priorities. Yet, as the question loom, does Akande possess the necessary political gravitas to be the anointed one? He has been reported to be making underground moves to build bridges among fellow appointees of his principal and few political leaders in the state which he had sidelined for years.
The Technocrat’s Challenge
Dr. Akande represents a new breed of leadership, one grounded in expertise and technical proficiency rather than traditional political pedigree.
His achievements in agribusiness in the state have earned him respect, but will that translate into electoral support? Your guess is as good as mine. Oyo’s political history suggests a preference for seasoned politicians who understand the intricate dance of local politics.
Reflecting on the legacy of the immediate-past governor, late Senator Abiola Ajimobi, who attempted to install the current Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu, as his successor, Akande faces a daunting challenge if Makinde decided to anoint him as his preferred candidate.
Despite Ajimobi’s influence, he could not secure the governorship for Adelabu, highlighting the unpredictable nature of Oyo politics.
Late Lam Adesina was firstly elected as House of Representatives member in the Second Republic, Oba Rashidi Ladoja was elected as a Senator in the aborted Third Republic while late Abiola Ajimobi was elected as Senator in the current Republic, Late Alao Akala was elected as Ogbomoso North Local Government Chairman before he became a deputy and Governor. Did you just say Seyi Makinde broke the jinx in 2019? Yes, Makinde was elected in 2019 without serving in any capacity even as a Councilor in his Ward 11, in Ibadan Northeast but his name had resonated with the electorates since 2007 when he contested for Oyo South Senatorial District on the platform of ANPP. In 2011, he was denied the PDP ticket for Oyo South and in 2015, he contested for Oyo governorship on the platform of SDP. Why didn’t Adelabu win in 2019 despite having a Buhari, Ajimobi and all the might(s)? Will Dr Debo Akande succeed if given PDP ticket?
Similarly, Governor Makinde is now tasked with finding a successor who can not only maintain his vision but also navigate the complex political landscape that thwarted Ajimobi’s ambitions.
As Oyo’s Peoples Democratic Party, PDP leaders ponder their next move, the sentiment around whether members are ready to embrace another four years of technocratic governance is crucial. How influential are the traditional PDP leaders in the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde? God, The Father, must have been kind to GSM with the steps and decisions he took from Omituntun 1.0.
The electorate’s mood is fickle, and while Akande’s accomplishments are noteworthy, they may not suffice to sway voters who are accustomed to more familiar political figures.
Popularity and Political Relationships
A candidate’s popularity is vital, and Dr. Akande’s visibility beyond his immediate constituency remains a pressing issue. Is he known in his polling unit, let alone ward or local government?
How well do the people of Ibadan know him? The answer to this question could dictate his chances in a race where name recognition often plays a pivotal role.
Moreover, the strength of Dr. Akande’s relationships with other political functionaries in the state is essential. Does he have the necessary connections to garner support from influential leaders, or does he risk being seen as an outsider in an arena dominated by established politicians?
Building alliances will be key to his political survival, especially as he navigates the complex dynamics of Oyo’s political landscape. If he can cultivate strong ties with local leaders and party elites, it could significantly bolster his candidacy.
The Promise Factor
Promises made in the political arena carry significant weight. Dr. Akande must consider his track record: Does he follow through on his commitments and promises to people? Perhaps, Alhaji Akeem Azeez (Personal Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde) and Peter Eledan (Uncle Peroooo), may have answers to that.
Voters are increasingly discerning and expect candidates to honour their pledges. A history of reliability can bolster his candidacy, while a perceived failure to deliver could undermine his efforts.
In a state where political trust has been eroded by past disappointments, Akande’s ability to demonstrate accountability and follow through on promises will be crucial in winning over skeptical voters.
Key Determinants of Gubernatorial Success
As the political scene evolves, several critical factors will determine who emerges as the next governor of Oyo State. The support of Ibadan elites and leaders are always instrumental; their endorsements could significantly influence his chances.
If Akande can secure the backing of influential figures who resonate with the electorate, it could pave the way for his success.
The opinion of Ibadan elites often shapes public perception, making it essential to gauge their stance on Akande’s candidacy. Their influence in the political and social landscape cannot be underestimated, as they often play a role in mobilising support during elections.
Ultimately, the voters will decide. Their views on Akande, informed by his public service and political relationships, will play a crucial role in shaping his electoral prospects. Engaging with the electorate and addressing their concerns will be vital as he seeks to establish himself as a viable candidate.
Makinde The Jinx Breaker?
Governor Makinde’s ability to break the cycle of unsuccessful successions hinges on his choice of successor.
But the questions remain: Does Akande have the political acumen to navigate this complex landscape? Can he connect with the electorate and forge the alliances necessary for success?
As the countdown to January begins, when the governor is expected to unveil his anointed candidate, the political landscape of Oyo State holds its breath. Mogaji Abass Oloko, just keep sustaining Makinde’s billboard at Isale Alfa pending when the unveiling will be done.
The path ahead will undoubtedly be challenging, but for those prepared to seize the moment, the rewards could be monumental.
Will Dr. Debo Akande rise to the occasion, or will he remain an underdog in a race dominated by political titans? Only time will tell.
