2027: Defections of Bigwigs in Oyo PDP Force Makinde Back to Drawing Board
…as Gov May Pacify Aggrieved Leaders, Members with Appointments, Other Incentives
With the 2027 general elections fast approaching, political tremors are shaking the Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as a wave of defections by prominent party figures threatens the cohesion and electoral prospects of the ruling party.

Governor Seyi Makinde is reportedly under pressure to recalibrate his political strategy in response to the departures.
Sources within the party disclosed to Goalpoacher News that several influential members, described as long-standing party “bigwigs,” have either defected or are in advanced talks with rival political parties.

Their exits, largely attributed to internal dissatisfaction and alleged marginalisation, have dealt a significant blow to the PDP’s grassroots mobilisation and unity in the state.
“Governor Makinde is aware of the developments and is seriously concerned. There is already a plan to reach out to aggrieved members and leaders, possibly with political appointments and other reconciliatory gestures,” a senior party insider told Goalpoacher News on condition of anonymity.
Political analysts observed that the defections pose a dual threat, not only could they fragment the party structure ahead of 2027, but they may also embolden the opposition, particularly the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has been making strategic moves to regain relevance in Oyo State.
It is believed that the affected party members have cited a lack of adequate recognition, limited patronage, and exclusion from critical decision-making processes as key reasons for their discontent.
Some have also accused the governor of running a “closed-door” administration, a claim that PDP officials have neither confirmed nor denied.
In what appears to be an attempt to stem the tide, sources say Governor Makinde is expected to announce a cabinet reshuffle as soon as his aides who are eyeing 2027 political posts resigned in early 2026 or other political appointments aimed at placating loyalists and re-integrating estranged members.
While no official statement has been issued from the Governor’s Office, multiple indications suggested that behind-the-scenes negotiations are already underway.
The Oyo PDP’s internal squabbles come at a time when national dynamics within the PDP remain fragile, with factional interests and regional power blocs jostling for influence ahead of the party’s national convention and the next electoral cycle.
Observers noted that Governor Makinde, who has enjoyed considerable popularity since his assumption of office in 2019, now faces one of the most significant political tests of his career.
His ability to manage the crisis and rebuild the party’s internal cohesion could determine both his legacy and the PDP’s future in Oyo State.
As the countdown to 2027 continues, all eyes will be on Agodi Government House to see whether reconciliation efforts can bring the party back from the brink or whether the defections will signal the beginning of a more profound political realignment in the state.
Efforts to reach out to the state Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democraric Party, Hon Michael Ogunsina proved abortive.
