2027: How Kwankwaso Boxed Himself Into One of the Tightest Corners in His Political Career by Keyamo

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has said that the former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has “boxed himself into one of the tightest corners in his political career” over what he described as his refusal or indecision to accept an earlier political olive branch from the All Progressives Congress.

Keyamo, who issued a statement on Sunday, noted that he had “always admired Engr. Mohammed Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso from a distance,” but argued that recent political developments had left the former governor facing a narrowing set of choices ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to him, Kwankwaso’s presidential ambition is at the centre of his current dilemma.

The statement partly read, “Kwankwaso wants to be President, but none of the major political parties will pick him as a candidate in 2027. APC & PDP are going South & ADC’s ticket is Atiku’s to lose.

“Atiku is the owner of ADC (argue with your keypad, if you like). Only a major political Party can win a Presidential election in Nigeria.

“NNPP is still a one-State Party, and with the recent wave of defections from NNPP (including the Governor himself), it is doubtful if it can maintain its grip on Kano in 2027. A leader is only as strong as his devoted lieutenants.”

He further argued that the former governor’s calculations rule out support for a northern presidential candidate in 2027.

“Kwankwaso will not support a Northern candidate because that ends his own Presidential ambition since he may have to wait for another 16 years after 2027 to get a shot at the Presidency – 8 likely years for the Northern Candidate and another 8 likely years when it rotates to the South again.

“That’s a gamble he WILL NOT TAKE. He will be 86 years old by then. So, this entirely rules out an ATIKU-Kwankwaso cooperation in 2027”, Keyamo’s s statement continued.

Keyamo said that based on prevailing political realities, 2031 appears to be Kwankwaso’s most realistic presidential window, but warned that decisions taken in 2027 would be decisive.

“Based on the above calculations, the only pathway for Kwankwaso is in 2031, but the alliance he builds in 2027 will be crucial to his ambitions in 2031.

“If his grip on Kano slips in 2027, it will water down his clout and influence in 2031 to be handed a Presidential ticket by any of the major Political parties. This is the time he can cash in on his presumed dominance of Kano politics and take a chance,” he added.

The minister narrowed Kwankwaso’s realistic alliance options to three political parties, noting that each comes with significant limitations.

“Kwankwaso’s only chance of a realistic alliance now with a major political Party is actually narrowed down to the PDP, the APC or the Labour Party (only if Peter Obi returns there and picks the 2027 Presidential ticket, and he agrees to run as VP candidate to Obi). But all three options present their own challenges,” Keyamo said.

On the Peoples Democratic Party, he stated: “With the PDP now gasping for breath, it may be easier for Kwankwaso to return to PDP on some terms (like taking over the entire structure in Kano and some North West States and returning Kano to PDP).

“And that will signal the death of NNPP. But with the zoning of the Presidential ticket to the South, that would mean a suspension of his 2027 Presidential ambition till 2031.”

On the APC option, Keyamo said, “If Kwankwaso decides to pitch tent with the APC, he is in no position to dictate so much terms to the Party. With the exodus of key figures from NNPP to APC in Kano, the APC’s structure in Kano is now in better stead to challenge the NNPP in 2027.

“The APC is therefore not so desperate for a Kwankwaso in Kano, but would be glad to welcome him into the Party. He still remains an asset. But one thing is sure: the APC cannot throw its entire structure in Kano under the bus for a Kwankwaso, especially with the Governor parting ways with him.

“However, the attraction of the APC for him is that the APC still has the national spread and structures to retain power in 2031. So, an APC option for Kwankwaso will also mean a suspension of his Presidential ambition till 2031.”

On the Labour Party, he was categorical, stating, “The 2027 Labour Party option for Kwankwaso is narrower because he simply cannot and will not run as Vice-Presidential candidate to Peter Obi. Take that to the bank.

“His own people will not even support him to give a likely fresh 8 years to the South (forget all the noise of ‘I will serve just one term).”

Keyamo concluded that Kwankwaso now stands at a critical political juncture with potentially career-defining consequences.

“From the scenarios above, Kwankwaso is in a very difficult political crossroads. The decision he makes now may retire him permanently from politics or revive his Presidential ambition.

“But one fact is clear: just like late Buhari and the CPC, without a handshake with another major Party, he will remain a local champion with his NNPP, but that too may soon vanish with the present predicament of the Party in Kano,” his statement concluded.

Makinde: The Aare of liveability By Sulaimon Olanrewaju

    By GoalpoacherSeptember 7, 20260

Last Saturday in Ibarapaland, the air carried the kind of solemn electricity reserved for moments that bend history. As the traditional rulers gathered; robes flowing, drums rumbling softly beneath the breath of the hills, they conferred the titles Aare Asoludero and Yeye Aare Asoludero on Governor Seyi Makinde and his wife, Engr. (Mrs.) Tamunominini Makinde. It was more than a ceremony; it was a proclamation. In Yoruba cosmology, chieftaincy titles are never ornamental decorations. They are earned through service that steadies a people, sacrifice that strengthens a land, and impact that reshapes daily life. By honouring Makinde, the custodians of Ibarapa’s heritage declared him a stabiliser, a builder, and a guardian of communal welfare. And what made the moment thunder with deeper meaning was its perfect alignment with modern evidence: the 2025 Phillips Consulting State Performance Index (pSPI), which ranked Oyo State as the most liveable in Nigeria. Tradition spoke. Data echoed. Together, they affirmed a single truth. The convergence of these two recognitions, one rooted in tradition, the other grounded in empirical analysis, tells a compelling story about Oyo State’s transformation under Makinde’s leadership. It is a story of deliberate policy choices, sustained investment in human and physical infrastructure, and a governance philosophy that places people at the centre of development. Historically, the title Aare Asoludero is associated with peacebuilding, protection, and societal stability. By conferring it on Makinde, the traditional rulers of Ibarapaland highlighted his contributions to security, intercommunity harmony, and infrastructural development. Ibarapa, once beset by farmer–herder tensions and banditry, has witnessed notable improvements in stability over the past five years. Makinde’s administration strengthened local security through the Amotekun Corps, improved intelligence coordination, and invested in communitylevel peacebuilding initiatives. But the honour extended beyond security. It also recognised Makinde’s developmental footprint in Ibarapaland, from rehabilitating inner roads in Eruwa to the ongoing construction of the Ido–Eruwa road, a project poised to unlock economic opportunities for farmers, traders, and transporters. Traditional rulers described him as a “foremost achiever and humanist,” underscoring the humancentred nature of his governance. While traditional institutions speak for lived community experiences, the Phillips Consulting pSPI speaks for measurable outcomes. The 2025 report assessed states using hard data and perception surveys from nearly 10,000 Nigerians. Oyo State emerged as the most liveable in the country, outperforming others in infrastructure quality, safety, environmental cleanliness, governance, and service delivery. The alignment between the pSPI findings and the basis of Makinde’s chieftaincy title is unmistakable. Both point to the same underlying reality: Oyo State has become a more functional, stable, and citizenfriendly environment under Makinde’s stewardship. One of the most visible aspects of Makinde’s governance is his aggressive investment in infrastructure. Roads, the arteries of economic activity, have received unprecedented attention. The administration has completed or initiated scores of road projects across the state, connecting rural communities to markets, improving mobility, and reducing travel time. In Ibarapaland, the Ido–Eruwa road stands out as a transformative project. Long a symbol of neglect, it had hampered trade and isolated communities. Its reconstruction has already begun to stimulate economic activity, with farmers reporting easier access to markets and transporters experiencing reduced vehicle wear and tear. Beyond roads, Makinde’s administration has upgraded the Ibadan Airport, built modern bus terminals, expanded street lighting, improved drainage systems, and executed urban renewal projects. These interventions have enhanced the aesthetic and functional quality of urban centres like Ibadan, Ogbomoso, and Oyo, contributing to the state’s strong pSPI infrastructure ranking. A state cannot be liveable if its healthcare system is weak. Recognising this, Makinde embarked on a comprehensive overhaul of primary healthcare. About 300 primary healthcare centres (PHCs) were renovated, equipped with modern facilities, and staffed with nearly 4,000 newly recruited health workers. This intervention has improved access to healthcare for both rural and urban residents. In Ibarapaland, communities that once travelled long distances for basic medical care now have functional PHCs within reach. These improvements significantly boosted Oyo’s performance in the pSPI’s health and social services indicators. Makinde’s education reforms have been equally impactful. His administration constructed over 100 model schools, built more than 400 new classroom blocks, and recruited about 20,000 teachers to address staffing gaps. School fees in public primary and secondary schools were abolished, reducing financial burdens and increasing enrolment. Tertiary institutions have also benefited. Oyo State became the sole owner of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, and expanded it into a multicampus institution with the establishment of the College of Agriculture and Renewable Resources in Iseyin. The Emmanuel Alayande College of Education was upgraded to a university, further strengthening the state’s highereducation landscape. These interventions have improved learning outcomes, reduced overcrowding, and enhanced overall education quality, reflected in Oyo’s strong pSPI education scores. …
