In a strategic move to enhance food safety awareness and combat foodborne diseases, the Ibadan North Local Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

The signing took place yesterday at the council’s secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, with key stakeholders from both parties in attendance.

The Executive Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Hon. Oluwaseun Olufade, signed the agreement on behalf of the council, while Mrs. Modupe Banwo, Project Manager of Food Safety for Africa at IITA, and Dr. Titilayo D.O. Falade, Project Coordinator and Food Safety Scientist for IITA, represented the institute.

The collaboration is aimed at sensitizing residents on food safety—a crucial step in light of the ongoing cholera outbreak. IITA officials emphasized the importance of food hygiene, particularly in a major commercial hub like Bodija Market, which serves as a key food distribution center in Oyo State.

Hon. Oluwaseun Olufade, while commending the IITA team for their efforts, assured them of Ibadan North Local Government’s full support in implementing food safety awareness programs.

He reiterated the council’s commitment to educating traders, food handlers, and residents on proper food storage, transportation, and hygiene practices.

Also present at the event were top officials from Ibadan North Local Government, including:
    – Mr. Akeem Olatunji – Head of Local Government Administration
    – Mrs. Olusola Ejiade – Director of Administration and General Services
    – Mrs. Akani Adeola – Director of Agriculture
    – Mrs Babarimisa – Director of finance
    – Alhaja kudirat nojimudeen – Director of education and social services
    – Mr. Bala Muhammed– Supervisor for Agriculture
    – Various Heads of Departments

The event was also graced by the Permanent Secretary of Ibadan Zone 1, Pastor Adeola Oduola, who acknowledged the significance of the partnership in promoting food security and public health.
