The pupils and teachers abducted in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending weeks in captivity.
The development was announced on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed the victims’ release in a post on his verified X handle.
Speaking with the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade who didn’t confirm or deny the report told Goalpoachernews that official statement would be issued by the government in due course
Bayo Onanuga wrote:
“Finally, the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo, have been freed by their abductors,” Onanuga wrote.
The victims were among those kidnapped in the Ahoro-Esinle community of Orire Local Government Area during a coordinated attack on schools that sparked widespread outrage across the country and renewed concerns over insecurity in schools.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to disclose the circumstances surrounding their release or confirm whether any ransom was paid. No official statement had also been issued on the condition of the victims.
The abduction drew national attention, prompting calls from the Nigeria Union of Teachers, civil society organisations and other stakeholders for urgent government intervention to secure the release of the victims and strengthen security around schools.
Further details are expected as authorities provide more information on the victims’ release.
