Bye-election: APC Members Defect to PDP in Ibadan North, Declare Support for Oyekunle

The political landscape in Ibadan North witnessed a major shake-up yesterday as prominent chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) officially defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), throwing their full weight behind the consensus candidacy of Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle, popularly known as Don, in the forthcoming House of Representatives bye-election scheduled for August 16.

The high-profile defection was led by former councilors who served under the administration of Hon. Demola Omotosho in Ibadan North Local Government.

The group includes notable grassroots politicians such as Hon. Laide Durodola, former Leader of the Legislative Council; Hon. Saheed Ademola Ibrahim (Ward 8); Hon. Atiku (Ward 6); Hon. Fire (Ward 4); and Rasheed Ganiyu, popularly known as Ladoja.

These defectors also brought along their robust political structures, signaling a significant realignment ahead of the polls.

Speaking to journalists at the event, the defectors cited internal crises, lack of unity, and the absence of visionary leadership within the APC as key reasons for their decision to part ways with the party. They praised the PDP’s internal cohesion and applauded its ability to adopt a consensus candidate without sparking internal rancour.

“The PDP has shown that they are not just serious but also strategically organized,” one of the defectors remarked. “Their ability to agree on a consensus candidate like Don, without controversy, speaks volumes. He is widely accepted, accessible, and capable of delivering effective representation to the people of Ibadan North.”

In a show of solidarity, PDP stakeholders warmly received the defectors, hailing their move as a testament to the growing strength and appeal of the party’s candidate. Party leaders described the development as a boost that further cements Hon. Oyekunle’s rising momentum heading into the crucial election.
