As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day on June 12, the Executive Chairman of Egbeda Local Government, Hon. Sikiru Oyedele Sanda (Lajue), has called on residents to remain committed to democratic values, stressing that sustainable democracy can only be achieved when governance prioritises the grassroots.
In his Democracy Day message to the people of Egbeda Local Government and residents of Oyo State at large, Hon. Sanda described June 12 as a historic reminder of the sacrifices, resilience and collective struggle that shaped Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The council chairman noted that democracy remains meaningful only when the voices, aspirations and welfare of the people at the grassroots occupy the centre of governance and public policy.
According to him, local government remains the closest tier of government to the people and serves as the foundation upon which participatory governance, development and accountability can flourish.
Hon. Sanda stated that his administration remains committed to delivering people-oriented programmes and creating opportunities that directly impact communities across Egbeda Local Government.
He urged citizens to continue supporting government initiatives, promoting peaceful coexistence and actively participating in governance processes to deepen democratic ideals.
“Democracy can only be better sustained and made achievable when grassroots development remains a top priority. Our people must continue to have access to governance and enjoy the dividends of democracy at every level,” he said.
The chairman also extended warm congratulations to the people of Oyo State on the occasion of Democracy Day, commending their enduring support for democratic governance and their collective contributions to the growth and stability of the state.
Hon. Sanda reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to inclusive governance, community development and policies that reflect the aspirations of the people.
