A tanker laden with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, crashed on Friday in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, sparking fears of a possible fire outbreak.

The incident occurred at the Ayanyan area along the Ogbomoso/Ilorin Expressway after the tanker, bearing registration number MAG 20 XB (Borno), reportedly lost control and veered into a nearby pit.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, said a distress call was received at about 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

According to him, a team of firemen led by PFS11 Oluwaleye responded promptly to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the petrol-laden tanker overturned, posing a significant risk.

He said, “On Friday, 30th May 2025, at exactly 12:30 hrs, the distress call was reported through telephone and Alfa Kabiru Aderibigbe to a trailer tanker accident at Ayanyan area along Ogbomoso/Ilorin express road, in Ogbomoso.

“The firemen, led by PFS11 Oluwaleye, quickly deployed to the scene of the accident. On getting to the scene, we met a petrol trailer tanker with registration number MAG 20 XB (Borno), with 45,000 litres capacity of PMS, which had lost control and swerved into a nearby pit.

“We swiftly swung into action by carpeting the spillage with foam chemical compound and neutralizing the flammability from trigger ignition that might lead to a fire outbreak.

“No lives were lost, and properties worth millions of naira were saved by the Fire Services Agency.

“CFS Awoyemi Seyi, a team of policemen, and a team of FRSC were in attendance for security and traffic control, respectively.”
