As part of efforts which aim to tackle food scarcity and boost agricultural productivity, the Oluyole Local Government Area (LGA) in Oyo State has allocated 140 acres of land for direct farming activities.

This move was part of the council’s strategic plan to promote sustainable agriculture, empower local farmers, and ensure food sufficiency for its residents.

In Karangbada Village, 40 Acres of land has been earmarked while another 100 Acres has been set aside in Oni-Gambari Village for the agricultural project.

The Executive Chairman of Oluyole LG, Engr. Akeem Olatunji, in a statement on Friday, January 10, disclosed that the local government would partner with Oyo State Agriculture Development Agency (OYSADA) under the leadership of Dr Debo Akande who is the Director General of the agency, for technical support and assistance.

The Council boss emphasized the importance of agriculture in driving economic growth and reducing poverty at the grassroots.

He noted that the local government’s department of Agriculture has been mandated to oversee the entire process from starting from cultivation to harvest.

“The allocation of these 140 acres demonstrates our commitment to enhancing food security and supporting the livelihoods of our people in Oluyole LG.

“With our vast arable land, we realize that agriculture remains the backbone of our local economy, and we are determined to maximize its potential,” Olatunji said.

According to Olatunji, the project aims to engage local farmers, youth, and women at various stages of the farming process through direct labor thereby, creating employment opportunities for local farmers.

Olatunji disclosed further that the LG would provide necessary farm inputs such as seedlings, fertilizers, and other necessary materials to ensure a bountiful harvest.

“Beyond making land available, we are collaborating with agricultural experts and organizations to provide modern farming techniques and tools. This will not only increase productivity but also ensure that Oluyole LG remains competitive in the market.

Olatunji explained that the Oluyole LGA’s farming project aligns with Oyo State’s agricultural development agenda under Omituntun 2.0, which seeks to transform the state into a hub of agribusiness and food production in Nigeria.

He however, urged all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community leaders, and local farmers, to support the initiative and ensure its sustainability.
