Group Counters Oba Ajibola, Backs Alli’s Governorship Aspiration

A socio-political group, the BSA Solidarity Movement, has responded to recent remarks by Oba Tajudeen Abimbola Ajibola, describing them as “thought-provoking but not reflective of evolving democratic realities,” while reaffirming strong support for the 2027 governorship ambition of Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli.

Oba Ajibola had cautioned Senator Alli to choose between partisan politics and his traditional trajectory within the Ibadan chieftaincy system, warning against what he described as the growing politicisation of traditional institutions.

However, in a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan, the Spokesman of the Movement, Alhaji Olatunji Ibrahim said, while the group holds the traditional institution in high esteem, it is important to avoid “interpretations that could unintentionally limit the constitutional rights of individuals to participate fully in democratic governance.”

The group noted that Senator Alli’s political journey and his position within the Ibadan traditional hierarchy are both products of long-standing service, stressing that neither should be framed as mutually exclusive in a modern society.

“Leadership, whether traditional or political, is ultimately about service to the people. To suggest that one must negate the other without a broader conversation reflects a narrow interpretation of a dynamic system.

“Ibadan tradition has always coexisted with politics without crisis. No individual should attempt to introduce division where there is none. We reject any narrative that seeks to portray the Olubadan institution or political actors in conflict,” the statement read.

The group further argued that Nigeria’s democracy thrives on inclusion and experience, adding that individuals like Alli, who have deep cultural roots and proven administrative capacity, should be seen as assets rather than subjects of caution.

In what appeared to be a subtle rebuttal, the group warned against “external influences and entrenched interests” shaping narratives around the intersection of politics and tradition.

“It is imperative that respected voices are not drawn into positions that may, knowingly or otherwise, align with interests seeking to dictate the political direction of Oyo State from behind the scenes,” the group added.

Reaffirming its stance, the BSA Solidarity Movement described Alli as “a bridge between heritage and progress,” noting that his aspiration represents a broader yearning among the people for experienced, inclusive, and culturally grounded leadership.

The group concluded by calling for constructive engagement among stakeholders, urging traditional leaders to continue playing their advisory roles while allowing the democratic space to remain open, fair, and free from undue influence.
