Guber Ticket or Crown: Oyo APC Rumoured Consensus Candidate to be Crowned as Monarch Next Week

The Oyo State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters has announced plans for the coronation and beaded crown ceremony of newly elevated high chiefs in Ibadanland, a development that may have significant political implications ahead of the state’s next governorship race.

In a statement dated March 26, 2026, and addressed to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Aderemola Ojo, confirmed that the exercise followed a request by the monarch for a list of high chiefs due for elevation to wear beaded crowns.

Among those listed for the honour is Sharafadeen Alli, the Ekaarun Balogun of Ibadanland and a serving senator, alongside other members of the Olubadan-in-Council.

The government stated that it is “traditionally necessary and essential” to confer the beaded crowns on the affected chiefs without delay, noting that postponement could generate political insinuations and undermine the integrity of the Ibadan traditional institution.

The coronation ceremony has been scheduled for April 3, 2026, at Mapo Hall.

However, the development is already generating political debate, particularly regarding its potential impact on Alli’s reported governorship ambition under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Observers note that under the newly reviewed Oyo State chieftaincy framework, traditional rulers who are conferred with beaded crowns are restricted from participating in partisan politics, including contesting for elective positions such as governor.

If fully effected, this could compel Alli to choose between his traditional elevation and any future political aspiration.

Political analysts suggest that the move could alter the strategic calculations within the APC in Oyo State, potentially forcing the party to reassess its lineup of aspirants ahead of the next election cycle.

While the state government has maintained that the decision is rooted in tradition and administrative necessity, some opposition voices view the timing as politically significant, arguing that it may reshape the contest for the governorship seat.

Efforts to obtain immediate reactions from Alli and APC officials were unsuccessful as of press time.
