Induction, Training of 5000 Teachers: Makinde Setting The Pace For Actualization of SDGs 2030 Global Agenda- Kunle Yusuff
Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has, again, aligned with Goals 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 12 of Global Agenda of 2030 as a result of the induction and training programme for 5,000 newly-recruited teachers and 700 converted staff from Non- teaching to teaching cadres in the service of Oyo State Post Primary Schools Teaching Services Commission.
The governor, through the induction of 5,000 trainees, which has now been increased to 10,000, in the ongoing Youth Empowerment Agri-business Programme YEAP, has scored SDGs Global 2030 Agenda.
The Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Sustainable Development Goals, Hon. Kunle Yusuff, stated these on Monday while speaking with newsmen in his office, adding that the role of teachers in promoting sustainable living is promoting vitalism, sustainability, education and professional teaching development.
He noted that since the inception of Governor Seyi Makinde administration, every of his programme on both territories and basic education has been in conformity with Global Goals 4 of SDGs 2030 Agenda.
Yusuff, however, urged teachers to continue to play significant roles in the lives of their students and be aware of right curriculum, pedagogy and discipline, so as to infuse the concept of sustainability in students.
While saying that they should equip themselves with various skills and knowledge at various stages to lead a happy and successful life, Yusuff emphasised that, by so doing, the concept of sustainable living can be well transmitted to all students (future citizen) by a teacher.
In His words: At the same time, the subject of sustainable living is also related to other concepts like education for sustainable development, life skills, quality education and teaching, sustainable development, sustainable environment, food security, social inclusion, sustainable community, peace and security, inclusive politics, human rights, and teacher competencies.
“To begin with, the teachers themselves are the starting point because they themselves need to be very conversant with the content of the subject before they can share it with their classes or students. This should apply to all kinds or grades of teachers right from kindergarten early childhood education to university education.
“This means the teachers need to first work on themselves to build capacity or relevant competencies regarding sustainable living learning, teaching, practice, research, publications, exhibitions, field work, and community services.
The Oyo SDGS Boss further made it known that at the moment, the United Nations 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs) has provided a good framework for teaching sustainable living at all levels using formal, informal, as well as non-formal methods of teaching or education.
He said the key issues of sustainable development which the teachers need to grasp are classified as: social issues, economic issues, environmental issues, and political or legal issues, which mean a teacher should be familiar with the goals, targets and indicators of the 2030 SDGS.
“The performance (effectiveness and efficiency for productivity) of a teacher is heavily affected by the terms and conditions of service, human resource management policy, institutional facilities, the status of students or children (socio – economic conditions), ethics, and effective implementation of the right Sustainable Development Goals Programmes,” Yusuff added.
