President Bola Tinubu has dispelled rumors of disagreements with state governors over local government autonomy.

Speaking during a New Year homage by Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) at his Ikoyi residence on Wednesday, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to grassroots development.

He said: “There were gossips that we had disagreements on local government autonomy. No. Just drive development at the local government level. Nobody wants to take them away from you, but we need collaboration.”

According to Nigerian Tribune, the President called on the governors to ensure that local governments fulfill the expectations of the people, describing them as the bedrock of development.

The President underscored the need for stronger collaboration between the federal and state governments to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges and accelerate national development.

He emphasized the pivotal role of state governors in driving economic growth, food security, and grassroots development.

“You are the most important link to Nigeria’s prosperity and development,” President Tinubu stated.

“The federal government accounts for about 30 to 35 percent of the allocated revenue; the rest comes to you. The agricultural value chain depends on you. You own the land, and the job is in your hands.”

The President highlighted the governors’ central role in ensuring food security and currency stability, urging them to prioritize agricultural productivity as a pathway to economic growth.

“We have to work harder, grow more, and ensure the situation of our currency improves. Nigeria will see prosperity, but it requires consistent effort from all of us,” he said.

Acknowledging the progress made across various states, Tinubu praised the governors for their efforts, stating, “There is no state we cannot visit and be proud of its development. We have better allocations now. Let me take the abuse; you take the privileges. Together, we will build a nation we are all proud of.”

The President also announced plans to visit Enugu State on January 4, part of a broader initiative to engage with states and assess ongoing transformations firsthand.

Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Kwara State, commended Tinubu’s leadership and policies, noting their tangible impact on agriculture and state development.

“In Jigawa, there was a bumper harvest, but because of the strength of our currency, traders exported the harvest,” Abdulrazak said. “Most of us are encouraging ourselves to stockpile into silos for the rainy day. In terms of agriculture, the policy is working.”

The governor urged Tinubu to visit more states to witness the progress firsthand, assuring him of continued support, particularly in enhancing local security frameworks.

Reflecting on his leadership journey, Tinubu expressed gratitude for the governors’ collaboration and reiterated his commitment to steering Nigeria toward prosperity.

“I am glad I asked for this job, and Nigerians gave me the mandate. We’ll be on this voyage together,” he said. “I thank all of you for where we are today and where we are heading.”
