Make Chairmanship of Oyo Council of Obas and Chiefs Rotational – Abass Oloko Urges Govt, Oyo Assembly

A respected Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Oyo State and prominent mogaji of Ibadanland, Alhaji Abass Oloko, has called for the chairmanship of the Oyo Council of Obas and Chiefs to be made rotational.

In a recent statement, Oloko stressed the need for inclusivity and respect for the historical significance of Ibadan and its monarchs.

“The Olubadan is a respected monarch in the Southwest and Ibadan has played significant roles in the history of Yorubaland,” Oloko stated.

He pointed out that the lineage of the Olubadan includes notable figures such as a former Governor Rashidi Ladoja as well as serving and former senators.

“The late Olubadan was a senator, and the present Olubadan served as a House of Representatives member in the Third Republic. This rich history should not be overlooked,” he added.

Oloko commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his efforts to promote a rotational chairmanship, stating, “Why are people angry that the Seyi Makinde administration is trying to make the chairmanship rotational? This is a step towards recognising the diverse contributions of all districts within Oyo State.”

He praised Makinde as “a true son of Ibadanland,” advocating unity among the various traditional leadership structures.

He urged the Oyo Assembly to “thread with caution” regarding claims over permanent authority in the council.

“Those laying claim to the presiding and chairman positions must desist; it is crucial to ensure that our traditions are respected,” he warned.

Oloko further reminded the assembly of the historical significance of Ibadan’s leadership within the Western Region, stating, “Let me remind them that Ibadan forces stopped the emergence of a non-Yoruba man to become the Premier of the Western Region in the 1950s.”

“This demonstrates the strength and influence of Ibadanland and the Olubadan stool in regional matters.”

Oloko reiterated the importance of a rotational system, adding that, “It is not just about governance; it’s about acknowledging our collective heritage and ensuring that every part of Oyo State has a voice in our leadership.”
