Mogaji Waidi Oyelami Kehinde who attended a recent gathering involving some Mogajis in Ibadan has withdrawn from the political position reportedly reached at the meeting, particularly the endorsement of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and the governorship candidate of the Accord/Allied political arrangement, Bimbo Adekanmbi, ahead of the 2027 election.
The Mogaji, who said he attended the meeting in good faith, explained that he was invited under the impression that the gathering was organised to discuss issues relating to the progress, development and unity of Ibadanland.
He said his love for Ibadanland and commitment to the growth of the ancient city made him eager to participate in what he believed would be a constructive discussion on matters affecting the people and traditional institution of Ibadan.
According to him, however, the purpose of the meeting changed when he arrived, as the discussion shifted from issues concerning the development of Ibadanland to political choices and endorsements.
“I was invited under false information that they wanted to discuss Ibadan progress and, as someone who loves Ibadanland dearly, I was eager to participate,” he said.
The Mogaji explained that he was not aware beforehand that the gathering had a political agenda, stressing that he would not have attended under such circumstances had he known the actual purpose of the meeting.
“Unfortunately, they had a plan I wasn’t aware of and, at the spot, what was meant for Ibadan progress discussion turned to political choice,” he stated.
He consequently distanced himself from any political endorsement or position that may have been presented as representing his personal decision, making it clear that his participation in the meeting should not be interpreted as his consent to a collective political declaration.
The Mogaji further reaffirmed his loyalty and respect for the Olubadan institution, stressing that the traditional institution remains an important symbol of the unity, heritage and identity of Ibadanland and should not be dragged into political disagreements.
He also maintained that individual Mogajis have the right to make their personal political choices, but such decisions should not automatically be presented as the position of the entire Mogaji body or traditional institution without proper consultation and consent.
The development comes amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections in Oyo State, with various political actors and interest groups seeking the support of influential traditional and community figures across Ibadanland.
