Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has directed all public office holders with political ambitions to resign from their positions.

In Oyo State, appointees of Governor Seyi Makinde who are jostling for elected positions are yet to resign. GoalPoachernews learnt that the silence of the Governor has continued to generate, anxiety, confusion and uncertainty among the appointees.

The directive comes as two appointees have already stepped down to comply.

The affected officials are Hon. Pius Alile, Deputy Chief of Staff at Government House, and Amb. Terry Igiebor, a member of the Edo State Audit Service Commission.

A statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Ikhilor Esq, dated February 28, 2026, mandated that all public servants, political appointees, and government functionaries intending to contest in the elections must resign by March 1, 2026 before participating in any party primaries or electoral processes.

The statement emphasized that the directive aligns with the provisions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026, and aims to ensure fairness, transparency, and the neutrality of public institutions.

It also reminded officials that governance responsibilities must not be compromised by partisan political engagements.

In response, Alile submitted his resignation on February 27, 2026, citing compliance with the Electoral Act and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve Edo State.

Similarly, Igiebor resigned on March 1, 2026, stating that his decision reflected respect for due process and the government’s directive.

The governor’s ultimatum underscores the state government’s commitment to enforcing the Electoral Act and ensuring a level playing field for all aspiring candidates in the 2027 elections.
