Segun Ogunwuyi: The Making of a Grassroots Power Broker and Oyo’s Emerging Rallying Point

Before debates about accessibility or public persona, a more fundamental question deserves attention: what accounts for Segun Ogunwuyi’s enduring relevance in Oyo State politics?

He is not defined by populist rhetoric or high-visibility political theatrics. Nor does he rely on constant public engagement to sustain relevance. Yet, Ogunwuyi continues to command significant political weight across the state.

A critical factor in understanding his influence is his political foundation in the Ogbomoso Zone, one of the most strategically important regions in Oyo State’s political landscape. Within this axis, Ogunwuyi is widely regarded as a leading figure in the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). His position has been built over time through sustained electoral participation, consistency, and well-established grassroots networks. His tenure in the House of Representatives further strengthened this base, allowing him to maintain close engagement with constituents and remain relevant beyond election cycles.

Ogunwuyi’s political strength lies not only in his base but also in his ability to manage and coordinate political structures effectively. In an environment where internal divisions often weaken party cohesion, he has demonstrated capacity to align stakeholders, manage competing interests, and sustain functional party structures within his zone. This ability to maintain cohesion has positioned him as a dependable figure in moments requiring coordination and strategic alignment.

As Chief of Staff to Governor Seyi Makinde since 2021, Ogunwuyi occupies a central role within the state’s governance framework. The Office of the Chief of Staff serves as a critical coordination hub, linking policy, administration, and political strategy. The role requires discretion, discipline, and sound judgment.
During his tenure, the Makinde administration has experienced a notable level of internal stability, with minimal public disputes or structural disruptions, an outcome widely attributed to effective internal coordination.

Governor Makinde has publicly acknowledged Ogunwuyi’s contributions, describing him as his “best aide” and identifying him as a trusted ally whose commitment to the People of Oyo State is unalloyed. Such endorsements reflect both confidence in his current performance and recognition of his long-term political potential.

Ogunwuyi’s continued relevance can be traced to a combination of strong grassroots legitimacy, organisational discipline, administrative effectiveness, and a measured, strategic approach to leadership.

In a political environment often driven by visibility, his influence underscores a different model, one rooted in structure, coordination, and sustained engagement.

As conversations around the future of leadership in Oyo State evolve, these attributes position him as a significant figure within the state’s political landscape.
