The Senate of the University of Ibadan, UI, has disassociated itself from the action of two of the University’s unions, NASU and SSANU that allegedly disrupted a meeting of the University’s Council on the 28th of October, 2020.
The decision was announced to newsmen after an extraordinary Senate meeting, held on Wednesday, at the International Conference Centre of the University of Ibadan.
The extraordinary Senate meeting, which had in attendance 188 members of the Senate of the University of Ibadan, concluded that the event in which the members of the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, UI chapter and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, UI chapter, disrupted the University Council meeting and disrespected its Chairman was unfortunate and regrettable.
While reading out the resolutions to newsmen, on behalf of the Senate, after the extraordinary meeting, Professor Oluyemisi Bamgbose, SAN, stated that the action of the two unions was condemned in strongest terms, as unions do not have any role to play in the appointment of vice-chancellors.
Bamgbose said the U.I Senate will appoint some representatives to visit the Minister of Education with a copy of the resolutions at the meeting, also noting that the normal university disciplinary procedure should be instituted to deal with erring staff, with immediate effect.
It would be recalled that two of the University’s unions, NASU and SSANU, had alleged a lack of transparency in the process of electing a new vice chancellor for the University and disrupted the meeting of the University Council on October 28, 2020, demanding that the process should be started all over.
