The Oyo State Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education (Oyo AANFE), has marked the 2024 International Literacy Day with a significant event in Ibadan, emphasising the importance of multilingual literacy.

During the event, Chairman of AANFE, Mr. Ayo Olopoenia, highlighted the theme’s relevance in today’s multicultural world, asserting that literacy is essential for education and societal harmony.

He pointed out that multilingual education is particularly beneficial as many individuals grow up speaking multiple languages, which can enhance their learning experiences.

Olopoenia explained that learning in one’s first language can improve comprehension and strengthen cultural identity.

He stressed that multilingual education promotes mutual understanding and respect among diverse communities, facilitating better communication and collaboration.

To encourage active participation, Olopoenia suggested that students must embrace their native languages, while being open to learning new ones.

He recommended language exchange programmes, where learners can teach each other their respective languages.

Similarly, the Oyo AANFE Chairman urged schools to organise cultural events and encouraged students to share their languages and cultures, thereby fostering a more inclusive learning environment.

In his closing remarks, Olopoenia called on all stakeholders, including families and community members, to support efforts aimed at promoting multilingual literacy, which he believes can help build a more peaceful society.

The event featured a keynote lecture titled: “Empowering Minds Through Multilingual Literacy, Building Bridges of Understanding and Sowing Seeds of Peace,”delivered by Prof. Abiola Micheal Omolewa.

The gatheringwas well attended, featuring notable figures such as Prof. Soliu Adelabu, Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, and Elder Ayoade Adekola, Chairman of the Board of Technical and Vocational Education; the Head of Service (HoS), among others.

The celebration not only honoured adult learners but also reinforced the commitment to advancing education through multilingualism in the state.
