In a remarkable turnaround, Wasilat Adegoke, the young dynamic Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Oyo State, emerged as a formidable force for change. Once viewed by sceptics as an improbable leader, she has defied expectations and transformed the narrative surrounding youth and sports in the region.

Adegoke’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination. Her proactive approach has catalysed significant advancements, empowering young people and revitalising the sports landscape. Under her leadership, Oyo State has witnessed a renaissance in youth engagement and athletic development.

“I believe in the potential of our youths,” Adegoke asserted, emphasising her commitment to fostering an environment where young people can thrive.

Her vision extends beyond mere participation; it encompasses holistic growth, ensuring that the youth are equipped with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed.

One of her standout achievements is the establishment of Oyo State’s first female football team, Pacesetter Queens FC. This groundbreaking initiative not only champions gender equality in sports but also provides a platform for female athletes to shine.

During its launch, Adegoke expressed gratitude for the support from Governor Seyi Makinde, acknowledging the collective effort in making this milestone a reality.

Adegoke’s influence isn’t confined to sports alone; she has spearheaded comprehensive youth empowerment programmes aimed at equipping young minds with essential skills in entrepreneurship and digital literacy. The inaugural Oyo Youths Summit attracted over 5,000 participants, creating a vibrant space for mentorship, networking, and collaboration.

In her quest to promote agribusiness, Adegoke introduced training programmes that have empowered more than 2,000 youths, ensuring they are prepared for the diverse opportunities in today’s economy. This initiative reflects her commitment to a well-rounded approach to youth empowerment.

Under her stewardship, Oyo State made its debut at the National Youth Games, achieving an impressive seventh place. This accomplishment showcases her dedication to expanding the state’s participation in a wide array of sports, fostering inclusivity and excellence among young athletes.

Collaboration has been at the forefront of Adegoke’s strategy. Partnering with NGOs and private organisations, she has facilitated scholarships and grants that enrich the youth landscape, ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all.

At just 29, she is not only a leader but a source of inspiration for many young people in Oyo State. Her journey exemplifies that with vision and commitment, even the most daunting obstacles can be overcome. Her story is one of breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes.

Wasilat’s legacy is one of empowerment and transformation, paving the way for future generations to thrive. As she continues to champion the cause of youth and sports, she stands as a powerful symbol of what is possible when belief and action converge.

The movement she has ignited in Oyo State is not merely about her personal triumph; it is about creating a future where every young person can realise their potential and contribute to society.
