The Special Senior Assistant to Governor Makinde on Sustainable Development Goals, Hon Kunle Yusuff MON, says literacy plays vital roles in economic and national development. The Governor’s aide stated this in a chat with GOALPOACHER NEWS correspondent in commemoration of World Literary Day. His words:

“September 8th was declared international literacy day by UNESCO on 26 October 1966 at 14th session of UNESCO’s General Conference. It was celebrated for the first time in 1967. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to Individuals, Communities and Societies.”

“This is aimed at helping someone to read and write effectively or acquire the basic math skills so many of us take for granted, improves the future of everyone in society. Literacy is critical to Economic Development as well as individual and community well-being.”

“The Importance of Literacy to Economic Development
Our economy is enhanced when learners have higher literacy levels. Effective literacy skills open the doors to more educational and employment opportunities so that people are able to pull themselves out of poverty and chronic underemployment. In our increasingly complex and rapidly changing technological world, it is essential that individuals continuously expand their knowledge and learn new skills in order to keep up with the pace of change.”

“From a collective perspective, a literate community is a dynamic community; a community that exchanges ideas, engages in dialogue is more innovative and productive. The sharing of ideas, perspectives and concerns also leads to greater levels of mutual understanding and caring, and ultimately strong community spirit.”

“Conversely poor literacy can lead to the risk of exclusion for some individuals and some social groups. A good example of this is youth crime rates that can be directly tied to poor economic and social outcomes.”

    Speaking the further,
Oyo State SDGs Boss appreciates the present administration led by Governor Makinde for the Investments on Basic and Secondary Education, particularly, on Free School Fees, Free Books, Education Infrastructural Developments, most importantly Training of Teachers in Oyo State.

Today, we celebrate Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, because he has been toeing the path of Global Goals Agenda 2030 on Governance,(Goal 4, Target 4:5 and 4:6).
